The illegal system allowed cars to detect when they were undergoing smog emission test and lowered the rate of pollution. Those emission controls were then turned off during ordinary use.

I wish I had one fitted to my car though, it failed the MOT last week on a smoky exhaust, probably down to a lack of use and the 80% mix of veggy oil in the tank.

I lost faith in German manufacturing when my Bosch cordless drill packed up after 3 months due to the wrong glue being used in the motor. Got it replaced and it happened again. Sadly German products are going down the same road as cheap imports.

The most awful cars are those manufactured from vw group.overpriced, overestimated and with ridiculously untrustworthy engines.NEVER NEVER NEVER again the same mistake.and I am writing in mid priced cars up to golf.

Perhaps you forgot to strain the veggie oil and you got a burnt chip in the engine.

No satellite stuff for the moment (aside from a 43cm minidish that was on the house already), Samsung SyncMaster T27B550 Smart TV & Monitor, and a few computers...

Makes me wonder how many non-US cars are affected too, considering the VAG lot also do the Seat and Skoda brands too with golfs & polos rebranded as those...

I had a Honda 2.2l diesel. Worst car I ever owned. Lovely when it works but most of the time it didn't.

I wouldn't own a Renault or a Citroen but I get on well with Peugeots and know them well... On my third now - a 407 2.2l HDi after having owned two 406s before that.

I suppose past memories influence decisions. I had a Renault 5 and a Renault 17, both rust heaps. Bright Eyes here had a small Citreon, spent more time in the garage than here. My Toyota RAV 4 3 door is 15 years old, had it for 10 and only ever changed the brake pads and cam belt. Road tax is the problem.

Considering who Peugeot make engines for (Ford, Volvo, Suzuki) then they are pretty good.
I have a 2010 Partner van (very good) and a 2004 Skoda Fabia 1400 diesel (given excellent reliable service from new).
No-one makes bad cars any more some are just better.

But I am a biker at heart......

Hyundai and Kia both stepped their games up lately. I think with these, it's the image of them that's the problem rather than cars themselves, which I am sure are pretty decent. They did used to make some awful drivel in the early 2000s though...

In the 90's i had a secession of skoda's (before vw) one with engine in the rear and 2 favorit's. Now they had a image problem! at the time they were the butt of many jokes, but they were good cars to me.

one with engine in the rear

The 120L "Estelle" or the "Rapid" (the "sports skoda"!!)? My dad had the former, I quite liked it, the rear-engined setup was quite amusing to me at the time, didn't know that certain flatulent rear-engined things from VW and Porsche had rear engines yet, so, the Skoda was funny, I remember the choke cable breaking in it too and having to scour through scrapyards to find another, well, my dad do the scouring, I just liked messing about in the cars, and pinching various interior light fittings... :D

It's funnier now though, those old rear-engined things are worth a lot more than they used to be...:-rofl2
