C'mon guys - you are happily talking about your venerable old petrol-engined bangers from 1970s, and slamming down on the modern VW cars?
The 1970s models were pure death machines emission-wise compared to modern cars!

Yes, VW (or VAG) cheats - not a good move to build trust. And not excusable. Cheating is cheating.

But their cars are actually quite okay from a user experience perspective.
I've had Diesel Passats since 2007, and I can honestly say it's the best car I've ever had (and I've had *two* new passats since 2007)!
Had a Peugeot 307SW for three years before that, and I was not impressed with performance, comfort, or utility.
(Had a BMW 520i before that, rusted like hell!)

The 307 was also an automatic, but suffered all the old-school automatic drawbacks: Slow gear changes, jerky clutch action, and lousy fuel economy.
The DSG in the Passat is soo nice - you cant' (well, almost) feel the gear changes, fuel-economy is good, performance is great, and I couldn't change gears better myself.

I'm not defending the actions of Volkswagen engineers or management when it comes to installing "cheat software".
I don't think it is excusable.
(And I'll bet it's like Tour de France - they were *all* on EPO in the 90's and 00's - else they couldn't compete. Wait for other exposés...)

But this doesn't automatically means their cars are crap.

(Ironically, to get really crap cars, you need to head to the US, where the VW is now considered sh*t, whereas your average SUV rust-heap-to-be-with-6-litre-200-hp-petrol-engine sell like hot cakes. And your leading Republican environmental figure denies global warming and Evolution as a viable theory for the ascent of Man.)

Oh well.
I hope my next car will be electric, or at least hybrid - as in electric with a fossil fuel engine generating the electricity.

Not at all. One only has to look at the move by many to stick three cylinders in a car.

And I own a 20 year old diesel vehicle, prior to that a 30 year old from the same manufacturer (and an Isuzu engined van from Vauxhall), All of which happily run/ran on SVO (at least in the summer), I simply add a bit of mineral oil from the pump in the colder weathers.

The real issue is the ultimate control of the petroleum companies to continue peddling their stuff, the car makers simply roll over, basing company profiles and short term profit via the showroom and false promises.

Bosch gave the firmware, and i suppose the updates that frequently are installed at vw service centers.so vw is fully responsible for the programming or bosch is under the orders of vw.either way everyone at the German knew.

Taken from a news paper today.

The German car-maker announced that the vehicles affected in the UK are 508,276 Volkswagen cars, 393,450 Audis, 131,569 Skodas, 79,838 VW commercial vehicles and 76,773 Seats. VW has not confirmed what the modification will involve for the 1,189,906 vehicles with EA 189 engines.

Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said: "The Government's priority is to protect the public and I understand VW are contacting all UK customers affected.

"I have made clear to the managing director this needs to happen as soon as possible.

"The Government expects VW to set out quickly the next steps it will take to correct the problem and support owners of these vehicles already purchased in the UK."

VW has admitted that 11 million of its diesel vehicles worldwide were fitted with defeat device software which conned testers into believing their vehicles met environmental standards.

The Environmental Protection Agency said 482,000 of VW's 2009-15 models in the US were fitted with the sophisticated software, which switches engines to a cleaner mode when they are undergoing official testing.

Once on the road the cars produced nitrogen oxide pollutants at up to 40 times the legal standard.

The Department for Transport has launched an investigation which will include retesting to compare laboratory results with real-world driving emissions.

Soooo, a large corporation lied about their products?? I've never heard such a thing before, I mean, lying about a product to sell it to people, it's unheard of...:-rofl2

(note the excessive use of sarcasm there!!)

I like how the grauniad claims that the motion lighting thing is turned off in the customers home, I wish it'd turn off on my Samsung TV cos it's frickin' annoying!! With the image during gameplay darkening when I really don't want it to...

And no-one has yet mentioned the 'spy in the TV' whereby they record your viewing history and potentially sell it to advertisers/blackmailers/police ...... or other highest bidder.

This country remains as the number 1 for CCTV, it follows that cameras inside the home (or detection via motion sensors/temperature and door sensors to the nearest home automation device and out to the ether) will be deemed innocuous.
