Astra 2E will be launched in July which will replace some of the older satellites used by Sky. Then next year Astra 2G will be launched. Some existing satellites are expected to leave (eg Astra 1N, Astra 2A, and probably Eutelsat 28A). So at the moment things are still changing. It's very risky investing in too much at the moment, especially as SES are planning on opening up a new Middle East beam on the new satellites which could block your access to some European based channels, depending on what frequencies they decide to use.

Yes, it is frustrating as it seems to take so long to get everything sorted. Hopefully by the end of next year things will have settled down for another 10 years or so.

Go down the IPTV route and you can have as much UK tv as you want.

Whatever happens over the next year the Middle East is going to find it more difficult to get the UK stuff off 28E as the beams are more restricted towards the west on the new birds.

Your going to get nailed by the Middle East beam on some frequencies when it goes on air anyway (no it wont be carrying UK channels!)

80% of the sly channels have disappeared from Cairo. It is now clear they will never return.. Now considering 2 options 1) move the digibox to the UK and watch via slingbox 2) buy a DDWRT VPN router package and watch via sly go. Would welcome other options from the fringe...

We're still waiting for 2E to replace 1N and maybe 2A in the next few months so things could still change. There is also 2G that may be used for some Sky channels later in the year too. At the moment we don't know how they will behave at the very fringes of reception but yes IPTV is looking like the only real way for some.

We currently have a Slingbox in the UK for FTA channels which works fairly well but you need a decent upload speed in the UK and stable connection abroad. At the moment quality is less than SD on our 1Mbps upload. I also use VPN via a UK registered iPad (so you can download the apps) for catchup services, inc SkyGo, which works well. Currently looking at testing a Samsung BluRay player with catchup apps using SmartDNS to see how that works too as Samsung seem to have all the main services (iPlayer/ITV Player/4OD/Demand 5).

I've also read posts on the forum about using a Linux based satellite receiver to get the catch up services, but don't know much about it.

Hi thanks for the info. We are all waiting for Astra ...

I have slingbox connected in the Uk for FTA channels and watch sky go through my iPhone / iPad with a VPN and WiFI router / MiFi. Unfortunately, sky don't allow HDMI connectivity or WiFi via Apple TV for sky go !!! This would be the best option by far. I can not get sky go to run through my Mac mini + UK VPN. I guess they monitor the IP addresses and block them...!

Which SmartDNS device are you using? I assume a DD-WRT router...? Thanks

Overplay, but I used it with a Sony TV which defaults to USA content and isn't changeable so not much use for me hence why I'm going to try a Samsung BluRay player next time (apparently they have a hidden menu to change the country's app store settings). The DNS settings are set directly in the device, no additional router needed.

We are all still waiting for 2e.... I have 2.4m motorised dish and sky + digibox. Let's see what appears on 2e .... In the meantime I have sky go on my apple devices through a VPN connection as I only get 2a south beam at the moment....how about you?

i don't know if it would be an alternativ for some of you, but there is sky germany on 19.2. They have not all the content, but what is there is usually bilingual, so you could watch in english. You'd just need to manage to get a subscription

Personally I'd go for Sky Italia on Hotbird, I assume also easier to receive. It's my backup plan if I get fed up with TV via the internet.
