Two smartphones. One placed in front of your TV running IP Webcam with your receiver in tuning mode showing signal strength/quality/dB and the other in your hand up the ladder watching it as you adjust your dish. Unless you’re in the business of installing dishes for a living I wouldn’t bother with those cheap Asian meters. Boyz toys that are actually not fit for purpose.
hehe, I don't want to use this near a television, but in a field (in forest, on the beach, etc), not possible to lug a big TV there, let alone have any 220V outlet to power everything :)

The Dr HD 500 BT Combo looks nice if you have good specification equipment to connect it with.

You may laugh at my suggestion but it works every time. Maybe not suitable for the beach or forest though. Not quite your typical install location though.

Strap a solar panel to your back and pack a power inverter so.

You won’t be able to view the majority of those meters in direct sunlight. Have a Satlink WS6906 here. Used it once and eyes packed up from squinting at the screen. Fine for nocturnal installations. A complete waste of money otherwise.

I do something similar I set up an old tv and my tm5402hd in the shed connected to the dish, put one of my ipcams in front of it.Sit on the top of the shed adjusting the dish with my tablet that has anycam installed.Waiting for some warmer weather to sort it out again.

Er. A satellite dish ?
What I mean is if you buy a cheap dish like under 50, that's a relatively expensive meter but a quality peice of kit.

Oh I see . Yeah. I don't think anyone reading this thread is interested in a 5.99 beeper from Toolstation .

Well, I do bring antenas to many interesting places, see:

So finders like this are a must for me :)

Of course if I wanted my sateup to be as inpractical as possible, I could probably bring a generator and a TV and extension cord and SAT box with me, but this would be hard and inpractical

Simple solutions usually confound the experts. I remember years ago watching a guy climbing up a ladder, meter hanging around his neck. His mate at the bottom shouting up, right a bit, left a bit, up a bit, down a bit. The guy at the top of the ladder never once looked at the meter but he definitely looked the part. In fact I reckoned the guy at the bottom of the ladder was on The Golden Shot at some stage for those old enough to remember the show.

For my part, I agree with you. OTOH, I've never come across a "simple" sat beeper to beat the "SMS 10" that I bought from the SMS shop in Camberly about 20 yrs ago (although I had to repair it several times when the F-sockets became detached from the PCB - finally fixed that with a "big" soldering iron several yrs ago, and no problems since then).

My opinion is the same for decades.... If you are a professional installer, do your math and purchase a professional field meter. This will do the job efficiently and you can document all installations in a serious manner. It adds credibility to your business, too.

If you are a serious DXer/reception freak, you normally would purchase a second hand professional field meter. The last one I bought for my collection is the Rover Instruments HD TAB 4. It is tiny with a reasonably big touch screen and supports DVB-S/S2, DVB-T/T2, DVB-C, ATV and FM radio. Comes with reasonably fast spectrum analyser and constellation diagram for all supported modulations. I got it really cheap and in as-new condition, but I have seen similar OEM models being sold at around 500 Euro. They cost about 1.500 Euro new.

This is just an example, of course! I also own 4x Satlook DIgital NIT. While they are bulky and heavy, they do feature the nicest realtime spectrum analyser function, very good DiSEqC-1.2 support and use plain 12V lead batteries which can be bought for less than 20 Euro. The last ones I bought cost me less than 50 Euro! The same goes for the Satlook ComboLook, MegaLook, Color, Color HD. These are excellent hobby field meters. Note that all models after the SatLook/ComboLook come with NiMH or Lithium battery packs, which are expensive to replace.

Other nice field meters to consider second hand: all field meters from Sefram (and their OEM), all field meters from Rover Instruments (and their OEM), there have been some KWS Electronics field meter (of the newer type and their OEM) on eBay, as well as, of course, Emitor.

Stay away from any field meter with CRT (except the Satlook Digital NIT/ComboLook/MegaLook, which are cheap and well built) and meters with B/W LCD screens, for example old Unaohm, Koenig, Technisat boat anchors.

Regarding the purchase of new chinese "field meters": these are rubbish. I have a few and they all get broken within 1-2 years, even if not used. The plastic/rubber starts to deteriorate, the batteries are normally non-replaceable and the software is simply bad.

These are in reality satellite receivers with TFT screen and battery in a small form-factor. But the software is so bad, that if you scan Astra 19.2E, you can't even properly change to the desired channel. With thousands of channels in the channel list, you get (at least in the devices I tested) just a CH+ and a CH- button... Imagine the pain to reach channel 500! Of course you won't get any propper channel editor, either. So the only option is to just scan one single transponder per satellite, so that you have only few channels.

The spectrum rendering in some of these devices is pure fantasy! You can disconnect the LNB cable and the spectrum runs for a further few seconds...

If they had at least proper satellite receiver functionality, they could serve as portable camping TV's, but the software is just not made for this. If someone knows a brand where this does work fine, please enlighten me.

Another option is to use a Linux receiver with E2/Enigma2. You can remote control it over the network and hence use your mobile phone. The problem will be the lag, though.

Regards,
Vitor

A correction to that post anycam is wrong. The app that I use on my tablet is Onvier. I have used it for years to setup my ipcams.

Totally agree.
Only yesterday i looked on the Emitor/Satlook site to see if there was a recent F/W update to my Satlook Colour HD but still remains at v40. Great spectrum refresh rate as you say, another one iv'e got for good refresh is the Dr.HD 500 meter.
My HD Ranger+ meters are my all time favourites at the moment.
Rgds.

It was already available last year. Now the price is slightly lower. It has a slightly stronger battery and a slightly larger screen than the original drhd 1000. But I don't know how this clone works.

you didnt need to add the fact you have PM'd me - i saw and replied to the PM - no one else cares im sure.

It's not just you, for some reason all posts in this section go to the moderation queue for approval.

The listing contradicts itself about (at least??) the battery capacity: the title say "5000mAH" whereas the more detailed description says "3000mAH"!

Anyone spot any other contradictions or "you have got to be joking" statements?
