Resurrecting a Legacy X86 PC..

Thanks for your input guys it is most appreciated .
I think I may have some insight into why I cannot read any media ..
As already said ..the Physical drive is recognised ..
BUT ..
effectively there are 2 drives inside the unit ..
Although these share the same device ID ...they have seperate LUN ..
logical unit number ..
These are not identified seperately ..because ,I assume, the scsi hast adapter is not using auto identification of LUN ..
What I need is someone who fully understands scsi ..and lun ...and I need a manual for this pnp scsi card I'm using ..
OR try a different card ..
Perhaps an Adaptec AH2940uw (anyone have one?)...preferably with drivers and manual..

Ok ..found a used AHA-2940UX pro pci scsi card ..for a tenner ..
Now on order ...
but may well need drivers and installation software ..
If anyone spots links to same ..or user manual..
please add to this thread.

Did you mean AHA-2940 UW, as in ultra wide with 68 pin connector instead of the usual 50 pin?
Not sure those are backward compatible, are they?

Anyone fancy an even greater retro challenge - building an 8 bit Z89 based Forth computer? I have half a dozen unused circuit boards and the chips were all standard DIL with a Z80 processor and 2 EEPROMs. I have a working one which I am pretty sure the EEPROMs could be copied from - IIRC they were in DIL sockets.

If the picture in this link is the correct UW card ..it does have a 50 pin connector ..

Cant find one in the UK ...and am not prepared to pay such high shipping..
I have one atm which is too long ...over 6 mtrs ..and the cable legth is just too much for a unit sat on top of the PC ..

I've seen one or two in the boxes I opened a year ago, but can't see them after checking this morning.

I do have a spare card though if it's of help, it has Internal conversion from IDE to SCSI from memory.

I have a few already ..but this is the one I specifically want which I _know_ works with my PD drive..

Update on the scsi DDS SDT-10000 I bought ..(now confirmed working)
The Veritas Backup Exec software I bought from the USA arrived this morning (desktop versio)..
Installed it on windows 98..
It is working ..and am just in the process of restoring the info from one of the DAT tapes I got..
It read the Catalogue info ...and says 90 minute movie ..
No idea what it is yet ..but if successful I'll report back.

It has a subtitle file ..so chances are it is in the original language..
only 4 minutes into the restoration as yet ..
prolly take about 15 in total..

Success ..


Just ported it over to my main PC ...and played it with VLC ..
plays just fine and is in what I assume is Korean with subtitles..
No English ..
original Language ..and non English Subs..
My guess this was dumped to DDS back in....2002 ..the date of the original Korean movie release

A quick update on the DDS tapes ..
There was some manga clips on one tape ..
these restored ok ...and also found a full instalation of win98 (not SE) ..
I couldn't and didn't want to restore it to full operation ..but did manage to restore all the files (unbootable of course) to an alternative temporary location ...just to see if iit would ..
The reason I wanted to attempt this ..was because 98 was -spanned- accross 3 tapes ..
..and yes this function worked just fine..
Not bad really considering this must have been dumped to DAT around 2000 - ish
So ..I guess this proves the durability of stored info on DAT tape ..
It is a slow process tho ..with error checking ..it took over 20 hours ..
I have dye based CDs and DVDs I've written that dont come close to lasting this long.
I'm impressed..
DAT was indeed a much overlooked storage medium..

Nah, it was quite common in server farms and business computer systems where backups were required, but, because they're so slow at recording and restoring they lost favour to the likes of HDD-clone backups & more advanced RAID arrays, or at worst, recordable DVDs...
