Don't forget that with the need to limit signal spillover into Europe there was always the absolute need to make sure that no-one in the UK was disadvantaged by the satellite. By that token the beam was no doubt allowed to stray further into Europe just to be sure the UK was OK.

Time and technology has has moved on since then. Future Ku band tight beams will no doubt be tighter than 2D and the higher frequency of Ka allows them to be tighter still. I think you'll be struggling to get Saorsat in Manchester let alone Marseille.

It remains to be seen what it will be like then again they will have to make sure that Jonnys signal at Carnsore is strong enough as well as Mickeys in Fanad head without spill over !! I doubt it.

Also how will Irish ferries keep their Irish signal in Hollyhead??? As Jim would say "tight beams my Ar*e"

They'll be doing it by using multiple beams across Ireland itself - that's how tight the beams will be.

Theres no argument about it - the new birds that have launched in the last couple of years have much tighter Ku beam dropoffs than the older series satellites. Nilesat 201 & Badr 6 are good examples.

Maybe in the far west. You dont seem to realise just how tight these beams are going to be - and frequency between spots reuse will limit things further. There are 82 spotbeams and only 5 or 6 sets of frequencies in use

From what I understand the Irish spot will be using the same frequencies as the northern France spotbeam so the southern UK has no chance whatsoever of Saorsat as they will find any overspill from France will nail the RTE signals once everything is on air.

Howevr its all guesswork atm - the bird hasnt even been fully fired up yet.

If north France is the same as Ireland, then how many KA spots could cover the UK. granted our european neighbbour might pick up the signal just as London would receice north France and Belgium.

Ireland is in financial trouble as well as party trouble, don't forget that RTE is funded by the state. It may have to change plans and join FREESAT using "red button system"

No thats a reasonable depiction of the coverage

The overlaps are on different frequencies so wont interfere with each other. Each colour is one frequency band - so you can see there are around 5 in use

Who live in the „border”spots limits must be lucky,they watch 2 or 3 spots with a single dish.Or nothing ?
Thanks for the inputs about Nilesat 201 and Badr 6,i want to make a test here to watch the real tighter beam capability of today birds.
About Badr 6,i think i remember somebody talking of my country forum,near to my location with a 3m petalised dish catch one or two frecvency few hours on daytime.

As I understand it, the spot beam will be largely similar to the existing terrestrial spillover so the IOM would be in with a good chance - for the rest of us it will remain the grey market subs until RTE cop on that some of us would like to watch it outside Ireland.
