Ah I think I see the source of your confusion. The maps arent transmitted by the satellite. They are underlays generated by the software. Effectively the data transmitted from NOAA is the cloud detail. The "weather maps" we like so much are composite images built up from NOAA & the software.

Have you updates the tles? In SETTINGS - GENERAL SAT DUMP - UPDATE TLE NOW
Ah! Thanks, that clears that up. Yes, the TLE are up-to-date. I think my antennae suck.

Have you set the correct satelite in the TRACKING CONFIGURATION because something is screwy somewhere. Even with no signal you should get the correct map location being generated.

Yes, I've done that. Complicated all this :D
Its complicated to begin with & if I had designed the s/w Id have done some things differently as it seems illogical to have to so manny different settings sections. However once you start get to images it becomes second nature to go to the different sections when you start it up

For those looking at them, here is a great pass this afternoon on Meteor M2-4, this is what it should look like when it's being decoded.

Meteor M2-4 good pass 6-1.jpg

As you can see there are 4 distinct modulations in the OQPSK decoder window, and a good sync in the deframer.

This pass was almost right over head.

Everything looks good for the last few days, so I wounder what was going on??

On another note, I have observed the satellites at night when they pass over, (some are hard to see but I have zero light intrusion) I find that the missing data (the dead bands on the image) may be due to when the satellite and the antenna are at the same horizontal plane.

Now the antenna I'm using is a home brew and it's receiving elements are in the horizontal plane, I'm wondering if I should tip (bend) them down about 20 to 30 degrees, this may make the dead bands go away when the satellites are at a lower azimuth and crossing over from below the antenna elements to the top side.

It may be worth a try, but it's going to be wayyyy to hot today, it's supposed to be over 40 degrees C today, so I'm staying in.

Look at the one in post #218 by Cirio70, I fabricated it and it seams to work better then my Discone. I just wounder if it should have some beam tilt to the radials.

Have a look at this design by sgcderek, it mentions how changing the angle of the upper elements affects reception.

A very good pass today on M2-3, this on channel 321, you can see the snow pack better in false color, I guess it's all in the angle of approach to my antenna.

And it's still wayyyy too warm to do anything to the antenna, over 105 F today. (40.5 C)

Excellent thread! I'm also into catching sat weather images but unfortunately I'm having a lot of issues with QRM so the images I catch from the NOAA sats are not the best quality - most of the noice comes from the TV and other equipment around the house. I currently have a home made V dipole with reflectors but I'm planning to use the CM 1.2 dish to catch the other types of NOAA transmissions.
