No appologies needed m8, just an thanks to you for your excellent work on the reciever :)
Think it still does an very good job, not planning on parting with the reciever yet, running my actuator fine with the 1.1 Triax dish from 50 east to 50 west.

I put the fan on top of the PSU then, took out an section of the top cabinet and blow the air in, cleaning the reciever once an year of dust.

Inside stays absolutely cold, reduced the rpm's of the van with an small resistor in the + lead feeding it from the +12 volt line on the back.
The only design flaw they made was to block the airflow from the underside of the cabinet to the top with the PCB.
This way they made the reciever no airflow could be possible from the underside to the top.

This causes the PSU to heat up too hot, caps loosing their fluid and break down, as well some makes of the memory chip wich were an bad batch to go prematurely.

The cooling with fan and heatsinks solves those problems.

Use ballbearing fan, these last the longest.

Thanks, Llew, for the excellent circuit diagram. My receiver has suffered failure of D16 and D17, which are easy to deal with - though procuring relacements might not be easy. Cricklewood has P6KE180A which I will need to check to see if it is a suitable replacement.
However, the 'hot spot' you refer to under R3 is bad. But, worse, the colour coding on R3 is yellow, yellow, black, yellow, yellow. The value measures as 18.8k which is, obviously, wrong and, so, it must have risen in value due to intense overheating. (In fact, I suspect the yellow bands may, once, have been orange!) So, please can you let me know the value of R3. I guess it is 33 ohms. Thanks.

Hi Tony

R3 is 15K - I did reply to a similar query earlier, I'll add the value of that rogue resistor to my original post! -

Yes, difficult to find those suppressors; like yourself, have to check on replacements.

Thank you, Llew, for the resistor value. Yes, it gets quite hot, not surprising with almost 200v AC across it. Luckily, I have several 15k WW resistors of Painton make, from when I worked for them over 40 years ago. They are rejects for appearance, but electrically sound. They are 5w glazed types. If anyone reading this would like one as replacement for their hot, 1w type, I will send them one if they e-mail me at tkightley*tiscali.co.uk

Hi Tony

Yes, excellent resistors, used to use them in HI-Fi projects in the '60s.

My only caveat in using high-value wirewounds in switch-mode supplies would be their self-inductance, although granted it will be in the LF side of the supply.

I assume they are bifilar wound though, so maybe they'll be suitable.

Hi Llew,

No, they are not bifilar wound, and to achieve such a high value, there are many turns of very fine wire. So, we will have to see how the one I have fitted behaves in use.

You will probably have to source the components from more than one supplier.

The resistors and capacitors shouldn't be a problem, try Farnell, RS, Maplins etc.

Q3/4 - 2SC3205 and Q5 2SA1273 (or BC640) Cricklewood Electronics

D2/3 - ZD13, ZD30 are zener diodes. Suitable replacements are BZX85-C13 and BZX85-C30 respectively. Farnell.

The shunt regulators KA431AZ/LZ may be difficult to obtain. The suffixes denote the output voltage % tolerance ( AZ=1%, LZ=0.5%) The one available from Farnell (KA431Z) is the 2% tolerance version, not sure how critical this component is in this circuit.

I would be grateful if we could compile a list with part numbers from the relevant suppliers, will make life easier and help alot of peoples,we could make it a sticky, for everyone to enjoy,an input from all who have fixed their boxes would be great,as this is still one of the best recievers around

Agreed, it would be of some help to those similarly inclined (or competent enough, always keeping in mind the safety aspects of repairing mains - powered equipment.)

Feel free to contribute, I'll do the same in due course, and as you suggest, make another sticky with the results.

I've now posted a sticky describing components and values, with possible sources.

Also, I've revised the diagrams, as during my component check I found some anomalies in the original diagrams.

Can anyone help with my power supply? Output voltages are high 50v instead of 30v, 12v instead of 8v. Obviously to do with feedback circuitry? Voltage correct on C10 and C11. Changed IC1, IC3, all capacitors on primary side. System switches on, registers 1000 then channel number. After 15 seconds goes into oscillation, trying to switch off and on. Power switch has no effect.

Hi Iain. Quick guess -sounds like IC1 switch frequency is overrunning, causing higher voltages to the main supplies.

Have to check that one out

I'm fortunate that I have 2 power supplies, one is o.k., the other is faulty as above. I thought that IC1 was faulty. Switching them over resulted in the fault staying with the faulty supply. Same result with IC3. I'm tempted to change out for new all the diodes and resistors surrounding IC1. I haven't checked out IC2. Really grateful for your feedback.

Check your 5V line. The feedback optocoupler IC2 should shut down IC1 with a ~50% increase in this voltage (which is what you are getting on the other lines).

Maybe a dud IC2.

Thanks Llew. Going on holiday for a few days so it will have to wait until I get back. Will definitely let you know if it's IC2 or something else then,
Sincerely,
Iain

HI Ian My receiver as developed the same fault. The 8V as jumped to 18V the 12V to 24V but the 5V is still at 5V. Did you solve the fault ?
Cheers

Hi Reginald

Your problem is almost certain to be open circuit secondaries on these voltages, i.e. no load, causing the voltages to increase - possibly due to a disconnection or fault on these outputs within the receiver circuitry itself.

Unfortunately all voltage outputs with the exception of the +5V line are not regulated, so any variation in voltages there will not provide feedback to the primary supply and shut down the SMPS.

Llew
