Sky Glass without the shoddy TV to be available later this year:

Would not be surprised if the knobbled TV part of Glass is quietly dropped as soon as they manage to shift all the existing stock (and all the returned sets) onto unsuspecting customers. Was a terrible decision from the start.
I think that was a non runner from the start. I wonder if the head of marketing had already taken up in new position elsewhere.

Screens are still being peddled between the Ebay auctions.

Hopefully not just a lorry load of returned sets from the UK but an improved version, though I doubt it.

Did they release a standalone IPTV unit ? Making people buy a TV with its servicee built in which could just be an app at the end of the day is ridiculous .

They've said they'll eventually offer the current multiroom 'puck' as a standalone product, but haven't announced a date. Presumably they're waiting until they've shifted all the 1st generation Glass televisions.

It's still inflexible - you cant subscribe to sports or movies without the base 'ultimate' package and if you stop subscribing all the other apps stop working too. With Now TV everything else keeps working with IIRC reminders/nags/ads from Sky to encourage you subscribe again.

In my humble opinion sky glass is not a good idea, streaming high def and 4k is just stupid regardless of how far broadband has come.

Streaming is the way everything is going but it wont be for everyone due to broadband not being available in real fibre speeds, so i dont think you can beat a fibre connection close by with catv or a satellite dish.

The other thing thats a bit stupid is if the tv breaks due to a fault then your whole system is down.

I also believe its BskyB trying to combat IPTV servers because without recievers with hdmi outputs its darn near impossible to use hdmi internet based encoders that IPTV protocol servers rely on and if you look at it from the past sky has been charging a fee per month for multiroom connections...(yes since 1998) and all of a sudden multiroom connections are one off payments.

Streaming has its uses but i,ll stick to a solid connection especially looking at how fragile and insecure the internet itself has become which is another reason why i now use open source programmable routers.

Pirate IPTV is generally awful at best. Good streaming (Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney) is decent given an average BB connection. I would go as far as to say that in a lot of cases, it's better than satellite as these services are not trying to cram a bazillion channels into a single transponder at RealMedia quality. I certainly find Disney+ streamed in HD quality to be much more pleasant to watch than the same program recorded from BBC over Christmas. Don't forget that many services also offer HDR, which is subtle but gives more colour depth to your image.

However, on the whole I prefer the solidity and predictability of satellite TV.

Can't comment on Sky Glass but given the flaming reviews from literally everyone, I'd say it's crap. And bundling TV into the package is just a marketing gimmick to offload that ancient unit from yesteryear at inflated prices.

10 years from now you wont have a choice if you want to continue with Sky - the satellite delivered service will be winding down by then.

There are no new satellites on order for 28.2E/28.5E so after 2027 there will be a limited service from this location,

Streaming HD and UHD is the norm today lol Pretty much every streaming provider these days offer those options (albeit some at a higher price). Sky Glass and Sky Q both have their place, I wouldn't write off streaming altogether!

In my case, I live in an apartment without a satellite connection. I can't ever recall an internet outage. My family home is much more rural and has a fibre connection. Again, we have only ever been without internet on a rare number of occasions. Sky Glass would be perfect in this situation.

Also I don't think this has anything to do with combatting IPTV. They offer Sky Stream which has an HDMI output, probably making it easier for IPTV operators to get a hold of compared to satellite.
