No satellite stuff for the moment (aside from a 43cm minidish that was on the house already), Samsung SyncMaster T27B550 Smart TV & Monitor, and a few computers...

Is the tube a straight replacement or did the holder have to be modified in some way? What sort of cost against a fluorescent tube? What's the power consumption like in comparison?

Only modification is the starter being replaced with a fuse contained in a starter casing (so bypasses the ballast), nothing else, it's a 15 Watt tube, over half the power of the 36 Watt fluorescent tube it replaced (bearing in mind it was a T8 tube in a T12 fitting, so the 40 watt T12 ballast was probably over-driving the tube), and the cost of the tube itself was £12.89... :)

Bought mine from this listing on ebay:

Interesting. Any idea what to do with starterless systems?

Presumably a minor wiring modification to have the mains power fed directly to the pins, bypassing the electronic ballast, the seller apparently has instructions for them, but there's also plug & play tubes that require no mods at all, worth looking for... :)
