Unlike the cooker, I can turn the toaster onto its side with relative ease. (the retaining bars give the cheese topping that 'flame grilled look as well, I always put the Worcestershire after removal)Get a "better" toaster! - I toast every day, and the tray does collect almost all of the bits that falls off the bread.
PS: I do my rarebits (also quite frequently), and usually with some ham under the cheese, but I use the grill in the oven - that means nothing, apart from a few bits of melted cheese, can fall off the bread/ham/cheese because it's horizontal!
I would never consider making toast under the grill anyway, too much space between the hot bit and the food.
