Rule of thumb: Acknowledge technological advance; Wait until cost drops towards 200 sovs; Wait until the Sales.

Im more than a bit surprised to discover my UH650V has an analogue tv tuner in it! Handy to patch into the distribution system for the satellite boxes though :D

Or if you get hold of a Band I tv antenna you could receive some of the remaining analogue stuff from Eastern Europe during a sporadic E opening ?!

Hmm same here but I've always done well, height ASL etc is not really a problem for Band 1

Got a couple of new LG TVs in the house over the last few months, so out of interest I had a look over the weekend whether I could lock the DVB-S2X TF1 Suisse transponder on 33°E (finally live somewhere with an unobstructed view from the garden past about 19.2°E!)

Couldn't lock the transponder on either TV, the only stuff that I got was the standard DVB-S2 France 24 HEVC transponder and the mainly encrypted Polsat Polish DVB-T feed one. Edision IP S2 also happily picked up the Bulgarian multistream.

I wonder if they're using different chips in the newest range of LGs that don't support S2X any more, or 12597 is just weaker than the other stuff and I wasn't quite aligned properly. The 25/36 FEC would be fractionally somewhere between 2/3 and 3/4 in terms of required C/N I presume so shouldn't be too difficult in theory.

On Edision Mio 4K the DVB-S2X TF1 Suisse transponder on 33°E works here.
SNR 78% = 11.6 dB
AGC 88%
FEC -> Auto

You could whip the back off the set and take some pictures of the chipset numbers.

A quick search brings up this.

Tuner can has EBL61920303 written on it and is a dual DVBT2 and S2

My mobile phone does not recognise the Aztec code on the lid, apart from giving the number 2004B0613 at the base, plus 0016342

Not managed to take a look at the chip in the LG TV, but I’ve been playing with the TV in satellite mode again, and the whatever the tuner is, it’s pretty good.

Once you turn off Freesat mode on these TVs, you get more menu options including manual tuning.

I scanned Astra 3 on a Zone 2 dish, and the LG easily manages to lock and tune in the very low symbol rate German/Austrian FM radio feeds (12639V 941 DVB-S DeutschlandFunk and 12643V 555 Austrian stations).

I had in my head that these were also on the Germany beam of Astra 3 (or whatever its equivalent is these days) rather than the European wide beam, so I was surprised to lock them so easily.

Flysat reports the Austrian radio on 12642V as having a symbol rate of 280, impressive :Y

I wonder if it will tune down to 10493H for the Es’hailsat promo promo and QO100 broadcasts on 25.8 east.

I think the problem with the S2X on 33E is actually that I'm not able to lock the signal. I got an Octagon SF8008 recently which definitely is DVB-S2X compatible, and I can't lock TF1 Suisse on there either...

I guess the transponder is just weaker than the Eutelsat Cirrus one (France 24 English in H265 HD) and the Polish DTT one, which both come in with signals of 7-10dB C/N.

By my calculations, the 25/36 DVB-S2X FEC works out to being between 2/3 and 3/4 - so in 8PSK mode it would need around 7dB C/N to lock (2/3 = 6.6dB, 3/4 = 7.9dB ).

Well I finally got this to lock today for the first time. Same dish (zone 2 minidish), so maybe the power has increased slightly.

8.5dB C/N on the SF8008 mini.

I can have a go with the LG TV again now I know I can actually receive the signal...
