Yeah but 2C is pretty close on the weirdness. That satellite has been floating around for years in various orbital positions and has never really done anything productive.

totally agree on this one, it hangs around empty or is travelling around whilst its original position lacks on free space .. but in return we have the fantastic 1D at 28E which is used to full capacity ... or isn't it?

Question from the back of the class. If 1N is to move to 19.2 in a years time, what will replace it? Another new one?

Ive emailed my contact at SES to see if I can get anything useful out of them.... maybe I can clear some of the speculation & rumours up.

I'll post any reply if/when it comes.

2F, 2E & 2G will be slotting at 28E from late 2012 to 2014 (in that order) :D

2A 2B & 2D will be sent elsewhere.

So if indeed they plan/are in process to shift all tps from 2D to 1N - where would they move 2D to - because that would be the only thing to assume why the would empty 2D (unless it is beyond repair and might fail any minute)

I assume the easiest location would be their new "junk" position of 31.5E.

31E to join the fleet there,
2E to replace the more or less derelict 1C
51.5E
5E to activate low band frequencies

There are several possibilities - she may even be moved away from European skies completely

a bigger dish won't sort this, could just make matters worse.
Not true! A bigger dish has much narrower beamwidth so it filters off interference from adjacent satellites (not that Badr 5 is a major problem in Alicante anyway except for people with dishes that are already too small).

And are you aware if they are in urgend need for a sat with 2D's specifications at any of these positions (fe at the americas) that would support the idea that they would empty and move 2d?

And to spin that scenario further: IF 1N initially has to replace the (10?) frequencies of 2D and probably soem of 2A and B - what additional narrow band capacity would remain if any?

Troubling times in paradise ahead..

Just wait for the howls of outrage from the Cypriots when the 28E Middle Eastern spotbeam goes into service and blots out many UK frequencies once and for all

All transponders appear to be functioning as before here in South Western France (Toulouse) no tp or frequency changes as far as I can see and reception is as good as it has been in recent days. I'm guessing nothing has changed......yet :confused

I do not joke where satellite specifications are concerned. We know there will be a Middle East spotbeam on one of the new craft. (And a Russian beam too). Its possible it will be lit up in the "Eutelsat band" like the current Nigerian beam on 2B, but if it isnt then it has to use UK frequencies....

None overlapping spots are the way of the future for new spacecraft - it allows the operators to reuse scarce spectrum effectively (orbital slots are running out rapidly)

Astra 1K had none overlapping spots as far back as 2002 (Iberia / Eastern Europe), but that one got dropped in the Atlantic in a botched launch!

Hi from Trondheim Norway. Using a 1.8m dish, and it seems like all channels are stabile at the moment, but I can't say for sure if there has been any change in signal strenght. The horizontal transponders are stronger than the vertical, this is how it has always been with my reception of 2D. From my point of view the 1N spot seems to be an exact replica of the 2D spot, it remains to see in the days to follow if I get a more stabile reception. Normally BBC1HD and BBCHD, ITV2 and other channels from vertical beams gets week beetween 7-10:30 in the evening, I will check if this is better tomorrow.
