Perhaps Eutelsat have put a big magnet close to it to stop it moving .....

It's not likely to be there already as there has not been sufficient time since the last reported test signal.

However, we must not forget the little snippet posted elsewhere that BSkyB have got a milestone to transfer 80 Channels from somewhere to somewhere else on 28 November.

That must be based upon certain other milestones. Whether it was just a putative target or was set in concrete remains to be seen.

That might be the old Eutelsat frequencies moving to 2F.

The change on 28-Nov is I believe revised PID's and not actual transponder or channel moves, can't see what SES/Sky would gain by making such a massive move from 1N to another bird when it's unlikely 2E will not have been tested by SES at 28.2E even if it has arrived, which unlikely unless it's been moving all week already. I seem to remember with 2F they moved some test transponders for a week or more before relocating live transponders.

If this is just about structural data stuff like PIDs, it would not be limited to a particular satellite. However I dont believe this is about PIDs -they wouldnt do such a thing simultaniously on 80 channels.

at the risk of venturing into the realm of "speculation" ;)...could this massive sky channel transfer be towards 2F, rather than 2e?

That's possible... 2A to 2F... 2A is quite old, still has quite a lot of work to do right now.

Yes, that's a distinct possibility.

The thing is, those TLE's were definitely updated when 2F started moving so we all knew it was on it's way within a few days, not sure what would change with 2E?

The Ku band testing has definitely stopped, at least we know that for sure!! Unless we get confirmation she's on her way west by Monday then I think it's a pretty dead-cert that 2E won't be in operation for Christmas to take 1N (and possibly 2A's) transponders. I still think illumination and testing of a TP is likely before Christmas so hopefully we'll see her in action but as time ticks on, I just can't see SES carrying out a mass TP move from two satellites before the Christmas/New Year period.

The best option to me would be to get her to 28.2E, test a TP in the run up and over Christmas, then have a plan ready for the first week in to January for the mass movement of TP's. Alix Pryde at BBC Distribution will also do a blog post for this move as they do for various service distribution changes. Following the DVB-S to S2 change on their first HD TP a couple of years back they've since promised to be more transparent with any changes.

But why now? They could have done that months ago.

This means that the TLE's are not updated regularly but according to need. The question is: Is ther a need to update fpr geostationary objects an d if not, when do they actually update.
As I said above they are updated daily, except weekends.

The celestrak website faq states that it could be as little as once a week. It doesn't mean, that the TLE file has to be old, just that the data within it is not updated.

That's not possible because the data references the epoch.

2A's now operating beyond it's design life and the plan was possibly to move them to 2E when it arrived on station but as that is now possibly delayed until the new year perhaps BSkyB are wanting to move some to 2F on a tempoary basis - I have noticed some of the 2A transponders have been getting weaker recently (down to around 48% from 57% - compared with 2F's pan Euro's @ 79% or UK spot @ 85% on a Zone 1 minidish with a longish cable run here in the Midlands - the EPG audio is now suffering constant breakup on my old Amstrad box (fine on the new HD box though)) and they may want them moving to a stronger sat before their xmas lockdown and doing a bit of spring cleaning at the same time?

How does the age of the satellite affect signal strength? i understand that solar panels deteriorate, but this reduced power is dealt with by reducing the number of transponders, not weakening each one by a few watts, surely?

yeah, normally the power output isnt critical.... it's about the ending fuel reserves for station keeping.

This milestone change of 80 channels.........

I think they might be moving the 1N TPs over to 2F so that as soon as 2E is on station she can be sent off to her original home at 19.2E

It would make sense to shift the 1N TPs over and prepare her for transit if they knew for sure that 2E was on the way to (or even on station @) 28E
