Astra 2F at 28E (at last!)

Excuse my ignorance ,but is this test for the U.K spot beam or european beam ?

Relatives in Hessen (Wetzlar / north of Frankfurt) can receive this transponder on a 0.8m dish:

Its quite weak there, but still usable.

It kind of blows my mind that up here in Hanover, which isn't all that far east of Wetzlar on the map (albeit around 350 kms to the north), I get zip, absolutely nothing, with an 80cm dish on that transponder. And I have an Invacom LNB on prime focus...

European Beam would be receivable in whole Germany. Moreover it's a BBC transponder, so....

Yes, but it's all a tad incestuous: Those Sites, good as they are, rely to a large extent on Reports from Individuals - so in a case like this they are Publishing what a trusted Contributor tells them >> And that might actually be no more authoritative than someone's qualified opinion on here: Who leads and who follows!


PS: Let's face it, SES themselves put out a Press Release two days ago saying 2F was On Station and Operational. Only partly true. Bunk, even.

Trondheim Norway in light rain, using a Dreambox 8000:
1.8m dish 11024H 8.6dB or 49% (Astra 2D used to be between 50-60% on this dish, the limit for receiving any useable picture is about 36%, H transponders on 2D were under this level some times)
1.1m dish 11024H No signal

Example from 1N, under same conditons:
1.8m dish 10847V 13.3dB or 76%

Generaly the 1.1m dish receives Astra 1N with signal around 60%

What I observed is that band D is stronger than band C. In my location band C is hardly receivable while band D works almost around the clock. The only exception is 11126V which is almost as strong as band D transponders. I am hoping that band D when moved onto 2F will be noticeably stronger than current 11023H.

general question i am still new to satillete stuff, most things i learn by playing about generally breaking them and then learning how to fix them, but i have no idea what these bands are all about ive seen c and d bands what does it mean and is there anything else?

Hello!

If the satellite 2F is off centre to the planned uk beam by one(1) degree, how many km may this represent?
One(1) degree at the earth surface below the satellite will be approx. 110 km?
As I understand, is the dish on the satellite fixed regard to the uk beam, and for that reason the beam will move parallel to the planned place at 28.2E as it moves west/east?

general question i am still new to satillete stuff, most things i learn by playing about generally breaking them and then learning how to fix them, but i have no idea what these bands are all about ive seen c and d bands what does it mean and is there anything else?

Its all to do with the old Astra 1 series transmission bands.

Long ago in the dawn of the satellite age satellites were small and restricted to transmitting in particular frequency bands So:

Astra 1A - 11214 - 11436
Astra 1B - 11464 - 11685


This ancient SES Astra graphic shows the official boundaries for each band.

The names have stuck despite the old birds being pensioned off years ago, although from Astra 1C there was some built in redundancy, so 1C took over some of the 1A frequencies when 1A started having problems.
