Brr - another dusting of snow overnight, then sub zero temperatures led to lack of signal on some of the dishes. Had to spray the lnb faces with deicer again then chip the ice off them....

So much for the idea of slinging up a spare sky dish for 5W today - its far too cold to work outside..

Still no Internet access - go to wait 48-72 hrs for the BT bods to get out of bed.

No DSL light, although Voice is fine.

Don't wait up.

No - I have neighbours!

Just got my own Broadband back: Exchange equipment fault.

Amazing how important having t'Internet has become - I had terrible withdrawal symptoms for the first day, then rationalisation and context within the meaning of life licked in and I was just sorely peed off.

I think as a means of communication I would miss it. More importantly it's a valuable resource for paying my bills, some of which have to be dealt with from my UK bank account. I could go up to the sisters along the road in an 'internet outage' emergency but it's hardly like popping next door.

I suspect your local BT exchange is unmanned, hence the delay in repairing the equipment. A big difference from when I worked for them when unmanned rural exchanges were not all that common. A huge difference from South Kensington where I was based, staffed 24/7.

Part of the delay (as well as the unmanned Excgange) is that my ISP is PlusNet, who in turn use BT to provide Wholesale Services.

So PlusNet are supposed to respond to Fault Reports within 48hrs, then if it is an external fault (like mine) they invoke their service agreement with BT: BT then have 72 hrs to fix it.

Factor in the weekend and I suppose they didn't do too badly.

I'm actually quite impressed with PlusNet, as it goes.

Well, for the second day running it's around 12C.

Such a change that even SWMBO is complaining about being warm ................ and that is a miracle.

Luckily, it's remained mild here too - up to 15°C yesterday afternoon. I say 'luckily', as Tuesday evening the Rayburn suffered a 'firebox' malfunction. (I discovered half a grate bar in the ash pan, which allowed a good proportion of the fire to descend into said ash pan) The Rayburn has a complex barred riddle arrangement with seven grate bars where the end of each individual bar is recessed and then dropped onto a pivoted crankshaft looking bar which you can push and pull to agitiate the fire. When the range had cooled on Wednesday morning I cleaned it out, recovered the other half bar and found that the adjacent bar was badly warped as well.

I am a little peed off, as although I bought the Rayburn second hand it had never been used. I stupidly thought that I would get more than a Winter and a half before firebox parts needed replacing. I've found an online supplier in the UK where I can order a set of seven (seemed silly just to ask for a couple of replacements) for about £185 plus carriage. I'm not even sure whether they'll deliver to France, though I have a plan to have them brought over if it's exhorbitantly expensive to get them posted. The supplier chirpily notes 'the grate bars are prone to warping and should be checked and replaced if needed'. At £25 - £30 each I bet he's laughing!

Today, I am indeed 'a grumpy old man'.

Could a local artisan 'glue' it back together?

I think it's a little beyond the 'glueing' stage.

True, you need some Tungsten rods to replace what you have removed.

Quite cheap as well, (no idea on shipping costs though)

Point taken....my comments were born out of years of avoiding paying Manufacturers' exorbitant prices and a supervisor fond of saying; 'What would you do if you were in the desert?' Worth shopping around though e.g. h_tp://www.solidfuelappliancespares.co.uk/ProductSubCats2.asp?CatID=16&SubCatID=27&SubCat2ID=179
You could also source your own courier if the carriage is excessive.....Someone recommended

and I've found them pretty good and cheap

Thanks for the links pgh13 and CH for the tungsten link. The Solidfuelappliancespares place is a bit cheaper than the other place I found, enough to make it worth getting the grate bars sent direct here, though I have yet to try an order to find out how much delivery will be. (The other place quoted me £50 to France)

I've managed to make a temporary repair, thanks to a length of thick walled steel heating pipe, an angle grinder and inspiration from Heath Robinson. The Rayburn is lit and seems to be functioning normally. I guess the test will be when it gets up to a proper heat and the steel pipe collapses or holds. Oh, gaffer tape didn't work sadly.

Thanks again for the links and tips.

You might be better off getting a local foundry to knock you some extra bars up.

I honestly didn't believe that there were 'fonderies' here, where industry is either from the land, tourism or high tech. But, thanks to 'Pages Jaune' I have located one about 20km away. It's an option to consider, thank's

Just to let you all know, I've ordered the grate bars from the suppliers PGH13 found. It was cheaper than the firm I'd found yesterday and with carriage to France it came to just shy of £192. Seems a lot I know but at least I'll be certain of the grate being ok till I no longer need the Rayburn lit. I may look into getting some cast though, which will be a test for my language skills!!

Grate stuff, Pete.

Quite straightforward in the end - no riddle at all.

If the bars are cheap enough it doesnt matter if you only get a year out of them :D

Well, I did imagine that they'd have a life expectancy longer than a year! It may well be my inexperience of the Rayburn and that I didn't completely clean it out prior to lighting it last Autumn. Sometimes you have to pay for your education!

The bars average out at £27 each delivered, which I suppose may be reasonable. The nearest foundry is an hours drive away, so I'd have to factor in two return trips (one to explain the job and leave two bars to take moulds from and one to collect the finished ones). I might try a posting on the expat forum here and see if anyone has tried using a foundry and how expensive would that sort of job be.

@Tivù: Yes, it panned out really well, barring any more accidents!
