Some context. We're at our house in France and as expected the landline phone and internet are not working (another story) and as a partial stopgap until the line is fixed have lent us a 4G wifi modem. They have lent us one of these before and we had a download speed of about 8 Mbps, about 4 times our normal landline speed but as you can see there's something seriously wrong. On the first screenshot the upload speed is so low it can't be measured! Slightly better on the second one but still crap.

I took the 4G modem back as faulty but of course it behaved perfectly in the shop. It gives better performance from time to time, usually after being left alone overnight. Come back a working landline!

It sounds like they use a similar system to the UK and the router/modem needs to sync with the exchange and in doing so then ramps up the speed to the next level until it reaches its maximum speed, this can take a few hours to a couple of days.

I understand that process but this is not like that. The falling back to next to no signal is time of day dependent and also it's a huge difference.

My internet was quite slow for a couple of days last week. I put this down to heavy use due to the school holidays. (It's since speeded up again) A silly question but have you tried the modem upstairs? You may get a better signal...:p:p

Hopefully 5G will resolve all these problems.

But I won't hold my breath.

I have recently had Gigaclear lay cables next to my drive and am being constantly bombarded by emails to sign up to them. They offer some pretty stratospheric speeds (up to 900Mbit) but some of the reviews I've read are just awful. So I am hanging on to my wet string and two cups that is BT line...

That is only for land line broadband, I think they are talking about the mobile network..

We have had a company called 6G Internet around here for 12 months now, they use the mesh fibre system, hence all the extra telegraph poles that have suddenly sprung up, I am afraid I am not tempted at all, despite one or two favourable reports.

When I watched some of the temporary fta channels from tivusat over the weekend the Italian Vodafone were offers 2.5 giga bits per second for 26 euros (also on their website), another case of rip off Britain?

Been a wee while since there was a post here, so I may as well offer one - switched to a local alt-net (Fibrus) back in the autumn for their 150/30 package. Don't have too many complaints about them especially as they're only charging me £15 per month for a 24 month contract - the only potential one being is that it seems Fibrus' ISP infrastructure seems to be based in southern England rather than in NI as the best ping times on speedtest.net are when using London-based connections, and thus the ping times don't really seem much better than what my old FTTC connections were.

For the record, I actually have two full fibre lines into my home - before Fibrus I had Aquiss' Openreach based FTTP 40/10 service for a year beforehand, which in turn replaced a Zen 40/10 FTTC/VDSL2 service.

I've recently signed up with Gigaclear on their 300 up/down package. Will be installed on a few weeks as I feel like my old FTTC line (70/8-ish) is akin to two cups and a string...
