Cats and what they like to eat

We got a stray female cat few weeks ago that decided to take residence in our building communal garden.
It is very friendly and likes to be petted.
I never had a cat before but this one is so cute that I started to care for it and bring it food on a daily basis.
I thought cats like fish, but when I gave it sardines of a certain brand, it just walked away.
Then I tried another brand, and it liked it. Now I am confused about why the first brand wasn't to it's taste?
Both in olive oil and with same price tag, assuming the cat can understand numbers?
Then we got another male ginger cat. It is very unfriendly, but that does not stop it from meowing asking for food. I tried to get close to it, but it is such a coward it just keeps away it's distance.
I give it some food just to see if it behaves in a more friendly way, but no. The other day it came so close to me to eat what I gave it, but when I raised my hand, the ungrateful beast attacked my fingers with it's sharp paws which made it bleed few drops. Sorry Mister no more food for you unless you know how to behave.
So, any one knows about cats can shed some light about the kind of food they like and dislike?

I've never had a cat that didn't go wild for tinned Tuna ... in Brine, not Oil.

Field Mice go down a treat, too.

It's a cat and as so, is choosy....

We have five, two of which were feral kittens. It takes a lot of patience to domesticate cats who are partly wild. I gained their confidence by sitting with a handful of dry food (we don't feed ours tinned food) and letting them come to you and eat out of your hand. Try not to move while they eat, as you'll spook them for sure and end up being clawed (as you've found out). Also try some cat treats and if you can find cat nip, so much the better..

As partially pointed out above, cat's don't like oil on their food.
I had two cats from the same litter, and they exhibited different preferences for food.
One loves tuna in Brine as @Lazarus points out, the other just loved cooked Salmon.
Generally, we tried 15 different cat-food in pouches, but ended up with Felix As-Good-As-It-Looks. They wouldn't eat anyting else.
In the end, we found that dried cat-food works best as the go-to food for the long term.
They liked the "Nature's Best" by Hills best - the surviving one still has this on a daily basis (going on her 9th year).

But if you're trying to lure them to you - the "cat treats" from the supermarket (and there are plenty available) will woo them.
Just be aware that it cannot be considered food. It's more like candy... :)

Cats are picky little sods, they'll like one food, but hate another, they'll also like snacks that they try to steal from you while you're eating them too...

We had two cats - the only two from the litter, both males and one was very picky. He wouldn't eat cat food, so we used to cook mince turkey with some porridge oats and fish oil added in. Sounds a faff but one cooking would last 4 or 5 days and no more expensive than good tinned food. Plus the odd tinned pilchard in oil and a spot of full fat Greek style yoghurt in the evening. The picky one lived to 18yrs.

This is Cointreau. He turned up about 15 months ago having spent some time living on the streets

Cointreau.jpg

It took four months before he stopped running away at the sight of a human, little by little he started coming into the house, although still wary of humans moving near him.
As you can see, he has now adopted us and has decided we are still allowed to live in his house.
He likes Mercadonna´s own biscuits and Felix meat in jelly pouches. He will also eat tinned chunks in Poop , but only when he has waited about half an hour to see if a pouch is coming.
Also likes meaty sticks ( also Mercadonna ) and dreamies!
