Ive seen a comment over on the DS forum from a contributor who I have always reckoned to be reliable which suggests that the polarisation has changed by 3.5 degrees from 5WA to 5WB. If so many of us will need to tweak our lnbs now

It’s True that the skew has changed 3.5 degrees for 5W B

This position had some difference (in the time of the old TELECOM satellites). I had to set a different value of skew on my pola-rotor from the rest of the GEO arc. This change of 3.5º, I was hoping is it going to be closer to rest of the arc.... or is it a return to the old times of special skew? What will it mean for us with motorised systems? Let it stop raining here, and I can answer this myself :)

I’m afraid I’ve given up on 5 degrees West after so many years of French TV in analogue and digital. I have bought a THOMSON receiver with TNT card here in Spain. On connection to a dish pointing at Astra 1 it fired up immediately, and quickly flashed up a message saying the card would expire on January 30th 2024, exactly four years from now. The first 1000 channels are “reserved” for the French bouquet, but from 1000 upwards I have the rest of Astra’s in the clear offering, including TV5MONDE Europe, as opposed to TV5MONDE FBS, in the TNT bouquet. Next task will be to see if the receiver can handle a Diseqc switch to add 13 and 26 degrees East

Are you targeting 13 and 26 degrees East for French content? It looks a good idea.

Here's my report from Alentejo - near Beja (Portugal)
( Uncle's house) Today with clean sky and sunny
3.2m dish, getting pretty much all TPs, at night there's an loss of ~2db for me

About 25km from my uncle's house in an friends house with an 2.8m dish he is completely dark, I'll be visiting him on the next weekend to try to align a bit the dish skew

In my house , here in Lisbon with my 80/100/33/45 cm dish's absolutely nothing now as you already know

Cheers

with 2.8m he should be ok in all frequencies. There are good reports from that area with reasonable antenna sizes.

Yeah I don't think from 3.2m to 2.8m there would be such an big difference, being in the same area..
That's why I'm going to check it out next weekend and post feedback ( he is not that good at aligning these antennas ) haha

In reality I have more than enough French from TNT Sat, and radio from satellite and Tune In, but
I used to enjoy TV5MONDE Magreb from 26E, and if it’s there I want it! Although I can still receive Dubai One and MBC in SD on my 1m Gregorian dish, no luck so far with TV5MONDE. Maybe it’s on a tighter beam?
13 degrees will give us TVE from Spain. I believe it’s leaving Astra 1 at the end of the month. As I only watch the lunchtime news in Spanish, it’s more convenient than switching over to terrestrial TV!

Understood. I am over 60 and been in the satellite game when the first KU band sats were launched. I like to install channels in convenient clusters.
As you say, you have to switch over to terrestrial TV just for one channel and you might want to switch back a few minutes later. I have had French TV at 19 degrees east before. I have 5 west, still working okay for the moment. :)

13 stupňů nám poskytne TVE ze Španělska. Věřím, že na konci měsíce opouští Astra 1. Protože sleduji pouze polední zprávy ve španělštině, je to pohodlnější než přepnout na pozemní televizi!

TV5 Monde 12073 H DVB - S2 3/4 need for lock 7,9 dB
MBC 12284 V DVB - S 5/6 need for lock 6,5 dB

Pretty much everything French except TV5 Monde, TV5 FBS and three newschannels is encrypted. :N My question is why? Everything is dubbed in French.
Austria and Switzerland are just as bad as the French. Everything (almost) encrypted. :N
Look at the Germans! They offer over 50 channels FTA covering most parts of Europe. The German versions of Eurosport and MTV are FTA. All other versions of these channels are encrypted. Viva Germany! :Y:)

For any recent foreign films, series, etc. the French channels pretty much always carry the original audio. This is what would upset the rights-holders if they were to be FTA.

In order to stay FTA, the German channels don't do this - only the German dubbed version is available. In fact, ARD and ZDF have advertised in the past that they were carrying certain films/series with original audio available, but only via digital cable/digital terrestrial!

Austria and Switzerland (and Belgium) having all of their channels encrypted is for the same reason as Ireland encrypt theirs - they are next to a much bigger TV market that speaks the same language as they do. Their channels only want to pay for the rights to broadcast to their own much smaller populations, therefore they have to encrypt the signal to avoid overspill to Germany/France/UK.

Good point!
Since I speak German fluently I'm happy to be able to get all these channels for free (just like the English ones thanks to Freesat).

Tv5 monde is dvb-s2 8psk. You need considerably more signal to successfully decode this over plain dvb-s
