For any recent foreign films, series, etc. the French channels pretty much always carry the original audio. This is what would upset the rights-holders if they were to be FTA.

In order to stay FTA, the German channels don't do this - only the German dubbed version is available. In fact, ARD and ZDF have advertised in the past that they were carrying certain films/series with original audio available, but only via digital cable/digital terrestrial!

I've always found the German love of dubbing odd when they generally speak pretty good english. It's also strange that none of the German commercial channels seen to offer English soundtracks on the encrypted Astra HD+, when clearly no rights issues. I guess watching in original language remains niche and it's not worth the extra costs to the broadcasters.

Austria and Switzerland (and Belgium) having all of their channels encrypted is for the same reason as Ireland encrypt theirs - they are next to a much bigger TV market that speaks the same language as they do. Their channels only want to pay for the rights to broadcast to their own much smaller populations, therefore they have to encrypt the signal to avoid overspill to Germany/France/UK.
Worth mentioning: There are some French FTA channels on Eutelsat 9B - the Swiss versions of M6, W9 and 6ter as well as BFM on Hotbird and three channels in DVB-S2X on Eutelsat 33E.

But the dubbing must be expensive too?

I really wonder why this one is so hard to get a lock to
I have tried today,having the RTI(which is HD) at 11996 H 27500 at 72% and a lot of others,BISS and MENA,also at 70-72% very steady
and this one doesn t give any sign of being there...why is that?

I can only get TV5 Monde Orient with a 100cm dish you may need to experiment with your settings from 26 east to 25.6 east or 26.3 east for some reason I have found this broadcast is better with a slight adjustment to your set up.

I’m not 100% sure, but I think I read somewhere a while ago that there’s some kind of rule that stops them having additional content on their HD channels (other than the picture quality being better) that isn’t also available on the FTA SD versions. So as they don’t have an Original Audio track, neither can the encrypted ones!

Re: dubbing
until 2000-2005 90% of films on French FTA tv were dubbed, including series...documentaries...even Attenborough
Original soundtrack was regarded as a niche, sthg "for intellectuals"
I do believe language teachers inFrance have fought hard for access to oginal soundtrack, when we compared ourselves to Portuguese,Greeks,Flemish Belgians who have always enjoyed that and, logically enough, were better than us at languages!!
But still today if you just put on a channel it'll be in French.. you need a personal action to switch on the original(ie a massive majority never does & keeps watching the dubbed version)
At least you can opt for the original
Let me add that ARTE,the French-German channel of reference started the move...BUT its German version still has next to no Originafassung of anything...except German ,Austrian

When Portuguese ,Flemish etc viewers HAVE TO make do with the original!

In Spain almost all channels have the original soundtrack, but English is mostly poor and even those who do speak good English generally watch the dub as "it's easier". Also surprising how many people don't even know the original audio is available or how they would get it.

I also think there's a problem that the spanish subtitles relate to the dubbed version, which could be slightly different -e.g. if a joke relates to an english pun or something. And besides, advanced English learners mostly prefer original language and English subtitles, which is only available on Netflix etc.

Who knows all I can say is that all the Italian TV that is now duplicated on 9 east is still available on 5 west maybe they have found some extra power on E5WB ^_^

Tv5 monde is dvb-s2 8psk. You need considerably more signal to successfully decode this over plain dvb-s
The next weekend with a clear sky I will give it my best shot, and at different times of the day!

I’ll be going home for lunch, northwest Spain, so I’ll see immediately if the migration has happened. Will report back unless someone else posts first.

TV5MONDE SD, FR3 etc still coming in at 14.15 local time, but rain, or rather, a power cut stopped play. Will look again at 23.00.

I still have all the tp's I had earlier in the week so I doubt the migration has happened
The radio channels had all “gone” at 2pm Spanish time. Will be home soon to check if there’s anything left on my 60cm dish...

Im still using the old Sky 43cm dish & the signal strengths are very similar to what I would expect from 5WA. The only change I can see is that Label TV has appeared on 11138V 29950 which Im getting at a shade over 10dBW. I lost the other version on 12690V 29950 when it went to 5WB

Swiss versions just mean some ad breaks have ads for Switzerland. Programmed are the same as in France, but FTA!
