The British weather gave us a blockbuster of a race this Sunday, with homeboy Lewis Hamilton taking a commanding win to put himself straight back into the title fight.

With standing water already on the track, conditions were going to be unpredictable before the rain fell later, and 4th on the grid Hamilton took advantage from the off. LH had an amazing start, shooting past Webber and nearly overtaking Heikki Kovalainen into the first corner.

It wasn’t long before Hamilton passed Kovalainen, and for some laps he was able to build a lead. However, a greater challenge was to come from Kimi Raikkonen when the Finn was released from 3rd and behind Kovalainen when the McLaren driver went off-track.

Raikkonen was now closing down on Hamilton, and the pair entered a period in which the fastest lap time was broken over and over again. With Raikkonen now in Hamilton’s mirrors, the pair pitted at the same time. Hamilton returned out in front of Kimi, but while Lewis changed tyres, Kimi stayed with his.

This difference in tyre strategy would go on to not only give Lewis victory, but the win of his career so far. When the rain came down, LH’s fresh tyres were able to grip on when Kimi’s failed him. Hamilton raced away into the distance, while Kimi fell away.

Hamilton went on to lap faster than just about everyone on-track, with only Rubens Barrichello matching his times in the rain – Barrichello was the only driver sporting extreme wet tyres, but Hamilton was still using intermediates. Hamilton finished the race over a minute ahead of 2nd placed Nick Heidfeld, lapping everyone but Heidfeld.

Shortly after the fateful pit stop, Kimi was considerably slower than others in the wet conditions, and was drawn into combat with Kovailanen. Going into Luffield, Kova lined himself to pass Kimi, and… but no! Heidfeld sneaked up behind both of them, and passed around the inside in a spectacular move. Heidfeld finished 2nd.

In the end, Raikkonen didn’t even get on to the podium. When the rain fell, Honda’s top man Ross Brawn played the best hand of the race – pitting Barrichello and Button and putting on extreme wets. Rubens rocketed past everyone he came across and for a time he even looked like he could catch up with Lewis! But it was not to be, as the Brazilian needed to refuel because, as it transpired, there was a refuelling problem during the original pit visit for the tyres.

Despite this, Barrichello’s luck was not cruel and he finished 3rd and on the podium. Kimi was 4th.

Kova completed the race in 5th, passing Fernando Alonso in the concluding laps. Also making a last points grab was Jarno Trulli, stealing 7th from Kazuki Nakajima.

And that didn’t even begin to describe half of what happened! Spins, spins and more spins!!! Half of them by Felipe Massa, the lowest placed finisher in 13th :)

Drivers’ Championship | Constructors’ Championship

Going into the 2nd half of the season, there’s a 3-way tie at the top – Hamilton, Massa and Raikkonen all head the standings with 78pts. Robert Kubica is still there with them, however, only 2pts behind. Ferrari continue to lead BMW in the team competition.

With half of the races completed, the champions F1 Aberdeen are in 1st as they have been since Spain, but their once comfortable lead has been cut to 9pt by Auto-Dynamo. Norm will have to pick up again in Germany in a fortnight’s time, because otherwise I might just (finally) take top spot :D. 3rd, 4th and 5th are as they were.

Leading the way this race was kreacher, scoring 102pts today but still in 6th. 1 place below him is Linhas, whose BMW team restarted their climb up the rankings after a rest in France. Advancing most this race were Honda-Williams, up 3 to now be just under the aforementioned Linhas.

Norm in the Pure FF1 Cup > Scoring 55pts, the Supa team will have to raise their game if they are to qualify for the play-offs. 4 races remain to get there. Good luck Norm!

Lewis Hamilton completed back-to-back wins for the first time this season with 1st in Hockenheim, and the balance of power is now firmly with McLaren.

Starting in pole, Hamilton had reason to feel confident going into the race, with Ferrari rivals Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen looking off-colour in qualifying, and the BMW Saubers also falling away from their high point in Canada with the Kubica victory.

LH’s race looked to be going to plan right from the start – good start, made a comfortable lead ahead of 2nd placed Felipe Massa, got back into the lead after the first round of pit stops were completed. All to plan, and then Timo Glock had a massive crash from a suspension failure in lap 36.

The safety car predictably appeared, and the teams were left with the common dilemma – to pit early or to hope the safety car goes in quickly and built up an advantage. While nearly everyone choose to pit, including Kovalainen, McLaren choose not to call Hamilton in. This was a brave decision, and one that nearly cost Hamilton big time.

The safety car took much longer to go back in than hoped, and Hamilton was not able to get the lead needed before he pitted in lap 50 (17 from the end). He came out behind Nick Heidfeld, Nelson Piquet, Massa and Kovalainen.

Kova quickly relented, and when Heidfeld went in for his last stop, the mission was clear – pass Piquet and Massa to win. Nelson Piquet in 1st? Yes, the Brazilian had battled throughout the race from 17th on the grid, and when he pitted for his one and only time just prior to the Glock accident, “Nelsinho” was gifted one of the best opportunities anyone outside of McLaren and Ferrari will get to win.

Hamilton first had to defeat Massa. LH closed in very quickly indeed, and although Massa put up a fight of sorts, Hamilton overtook Felipe at the hairpin with relative ease. Massa would finish 3rd. To win, Hamilton had to get in front of Piquet with 10 laps to go.

No problem. Just 3 laps after seeing to Massa, Piquet had nothing left to battle against Hamilton and Lewis inevitably took 1st at the same hairpin. Piquet finished in 2nd behind Hamilton.

Heidfeld came out of the pits to claim 4th ahead of Kova, in 5th. Taking the final 3 points places were Raikkonen (6th), Kubica (7th) and Sebastian Vettel (8th). Kimi, while having no problem fending off any challenges from behind, offered little in the way of an assault on the podiums places.

Drivers’ Championship | Constructors’ Championship

Hamilton is 1st and 4pts in front of Massa. Kimi is 3rd and 8pts behind the leader. While not winning again, Ferrari still sit on top of the team standings, and McLaren look likely to dislodge BMW from 2nd in Hungary.

SupaLiga 2008

f1slgermanyshorttablech6.png

(Full table available in attachment)

Whilst there were no big movers n’ shakers this round, the league is delicately poised and the points were plentiful in Germany with 4 +100 scorers – there have not been so many since Brazil last season when 6 teams achieved the feat.

F1 Aberdeen scored 101pts, 6 more than Auto-Dynamo, but Norm’s 16pts lead is still vulnerable with 8 races to go. Dynamo are still at the front in the chase for the European Cup.

With 124pts, Team Oily was top in Germany and this equals Oily’s all-time record when he also scored 124 in Hungary last season. This is the highest score in SupaLiga this year so far, and Oily will be hoping that this propels him into a late challenge for the title. Champagne for him!

The other centurions today were kleefarr’s Honda-Willaims with 115pts (best ever for him), and 110pts for Topper and his Tossers.

Norm in the Pure FF1 Cup > Despite the Supas scoring 101pts, they still can’t seem to get any closer to the magic top 32, and with 31pts to make up in 3 races in such a competitive league, the situation is looking bleak now.

It was a tail of what could have been this afternoon, as Heikki Kovalainen was gifted the race by the incredibly unlucky Felipe Massa.

After the total domination of qualifying, McLaren were expecting bright things in Budapest, and a 1-2 looked a distinct possibility as Lewis Hamilton, on pole, shared the front row with Kovalainen. However, the red bullet of Massa’s Ferrari put a massive dent in those dreams.

Starting in 3rd, Massa got off to a fantastic start, passing Kova easily and launching himself around the outside of turn 1 to overtake Hamilton. It was a stunning piece of driving, and McLaren were made to look like fools.

After the first round of pit stops, Massa was still leading Hamilton, and it appeared that Hamilton would have a real job on his hands to find his way through the back-markers and overtake Massa before the end.

Unfortunately for Lewis, such slim hopes were diminished quickly by tyre failure. A puncture saw Hamilton chugging his way to the pits and falling down to 11th. His challenge was over.

And that was it, Massa was the winner. Or so we thought. Massa, in one of the cruelest turns of fate yet to befall him, was a mere 3 laps from the chequered flag when his Maranello-designed engine let go at the very worst time. Had he won, Massa would now be leading the World Championship.

Kovalainen was in 2nd behind Massa, having another textbook, albeit unspectacular race when suddenly he was on his way to a maiden F1 race win.

Following the Finn was Timo Glock. Qualifying in 5th, Glock produced a clinical performance in his Toyota, the highlight of which was holding off an end-of-race attack from Kimi Raikkonen (3rd).

Hamilton recovered from the earlier disaster to complete the distance in 5th, just behind Fernando Alonso. Hamilton was in a Renault sandwich, as Nelson Piquet continued with his recent improvement to claim 6th spot. 7th and 8th went to Jarno Trullli and Robert Kubica.

Drivers’ Championship | Constructors’ Championship

The catastrophes of Hamilton and Massa, as well as the 3rd place from Kimi, have done little to resolve the ongoing tussle for the Drivers’ Championship, with Kimi making marginal headway by taking 2nd from Massa. 8pts separate the three.

McLaren-Mercedes have now overtaken BMW Sauber for 2nd, and trail Ferrari by 11pts.

I, yes me, your very own league secretary, am leading F1 SupaLiga for the very first time!!!

The late engine blow-out of Massa appears to have had a substantial affect on the fortunes of many. Not least of those to fall on the negative side of the equation is Norm, whose F1 Aberdeen team have fallen from 1st for the first time since the Spanish GP.

This allowed my Auto-Dynamo outfit to take first with 106pts in Hungary, and although the lead is slim, I feel it is ‘my time’ :D.

Setting the standard in Budapest were Linhas BMW with a new season-record of 132pts. This was the 10th highest score across Pure FF1 in Hungary, and the 20th best score for the whole season in PFF1. This sees linhas go up to 6th in SupaLiga, his highest position since the Belgian GP last season.

There were two other centurions today – ScotBordersF1 (100pts) is now in 4th, and Honda Williams took 103pts today… and yet still fell down 1 to 8th! Topper also gets a mention today, moving up to 10th.

Norm in the Pure FF1 Cup > The deficit has increased to 37pts, and maybe only a miracle will see the Supas qualify now.

Felipe Massa’s bitter disappointment in Budapest was forgotten in the sun-blessed harbour of Valencia, as the Brazilian won to close the gap a little further on Lewis Hamilton and (perhaps more importantly) make a strong case for being considered Ferrari’s true title challenger.

Starting in pole, Massa got off to a fine start and quickly established a lead of over 3 and half seconds on Lewis Hamilton. Kimi Raikkonen, on the other hand, was stuck in 4th and not looking like getting anywhere near the podium. Kimi’s bad day was to get much worse.

After refuelling, Massa rejoined the race in front of Kimi, thereby slowing down the Finn’s already slow progress. Ferrari’s tactics clearly did not envisage Raikkonen being so slow and now Massa was, if not already, definitely Ferrari’s sole hope of victory.

The second round of Ferrari pit stops provided the most talking points. As race leader Massa was released from his stop, Adrian Sutil was also exiting the pits and Massa nearly collided with the German. Despite the evident danger, the race officials choose to rule on the infringement after the race and not impose an in-race penalty – Ferrari conspirators will not doubt chew over that particular moment. In the event, Massa was fined 10,000 Euros.

Ferrari were not yet done with their pantomime in the pits. Shortly after Massa had left, Raikkonen went in for his stop and was far too eager to return to racing. While his automatic pit indicator was still flashing amber, Kimi decided to go green early and in the process took out the mechanics still trying to refuel his car. For his sins, his engine gave up shortly after and on returning to the Ferrari garage on-foot, the ‘Iceman’ made a quick getaway from the circuit – completely blanking questions from ITV’s Louise Goodman.

Despite all this, Felipe Massa went on to achieve 1st place in Valencia and by over 7 seconds from Hamilton.

Hamilton’s race was textbook, although the later revelation that he needed an injection in the neck in order merely to race. Kubica, qualifying in 3rd, also had a picture perfect race and finished in 3rd.

Heikki Kovalainen took 4th after the retirement of Kimi Raikkonen. Taking the other 4 points paying positions, in order of placing, were Jarno Trulli, Sebastian Vettel, Timo Glock and Nico Rosberg.

Drivers’ Championship | Constructors’ Championship

The 10pts in Valencia elevate Massa above teammate Raikkonen and 6pts behind Hamilton. McLaren are 1pt closer to Ferrari.

SupaLiga 2008

f1sleuroshorttablebc3.png

(Full table available in attachment)

F1 Aberdeen are back at the top of tree, scoring 96pts in Valencia to leapfrog Auto-Dynamo. However, the big story is that a new challenger has entered the fray as a stunning 115pts by Team Oily leaves them only 20pts adrift of the Aberdeen outfit.

Oily is only 2nd in the scoring stakes this weekend to misterminbus and his Pro-Drive team, who clock in 124pts – the 2nd highest score this season. There are 2 other three figure teams this GP; Tom34 recorded 104pts and Honda-Williams scored 101pts. This makes kleefarr the first team manager this season to score in the 100’s in three consecutive races, a fine effort indeed which has seen him into the battle for a top 5 place.

Linhas BMW continue their steady raise up the standing. Having started 2 races late, the Portuguese team are now 5th and lead the chase for the European Cup for the first time with only the Belgian and Italian GP’s left.

Norm in the Pure FF1 Cup > The chase for the top 32 seems ever more impossible and even scores of 101pts will not be enough.

Well once again the rulles seem to have been applied in blatant favouritism towards the red cars:

McLaren's Lewis Hamilton was stripped of a dramatic victory in the Belgian Grand Prix after stewards handed him a 25-second post-race penalty.

The Englishman was demoted to third place behind Ferrari's Felipe Massa and BMW Sauber's Nick Heidfeld.

The move came after an investigation into a late-race battle between Hamilton and Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen

BBC News

Last time around the stewards didnt apply any penalty when a red one almost caused a pile up in the pit lane, now this......

I dont know why the other 9 teams bother turning up sometimes seeing as the stewards seem to bend over backwards doing anything that helps the ferrari team....

Official Race Classification | Full Story | The Hamilton Penalty

Kimi Raikkonen was seemingly knocked out of the title chase when Lewis Hamilton stole victory in the rain-soaked final laps of this afternoon’s Belgian Grand Prix, but the race stewards had the final say, penalising Hamilton and handing victory to Felipe Massa post-race.

The day didn’t start well for Hamilton. Starting in pole, the Brit spun at the start of lap 2 and Raikkonen took advantage, leaving LH to chase the Finn.

The first round of pit stops came and went, and Raikkonen at one time had a lead of over 5 seconds. However, the hard tyres that McLaren had saved for the second stop and final sector of the race were to prove invaluable for LH.

Once equipped with the harder rubbers, Lewis was able to close the gap swiftly, but it would take the famous Spa rain to open up Raikkonen’s defences and see Hamilton overtake the Ice Man. In the penultimate lap, Hamilton attacked at La Source and went past Raikkonen, only for Lewis to slide and let Raikkonen back through again! But the favour was returned as Kimi aquaplaned before going off completely and finishing his race not soaked in champagne but in dirty water.

And Lewis won again… or so we thought. After the race, the race officials re-analysed the Hamilton slide incident in which the McLaren driver clearly cut a corner but duely let Raikkonen repass. The verdict – unfair advantage!!! Hamilton was punished with a 25sec time penalty and loses the race win to none other than his biggest challenger for the World Championship – Ferrari’s Felipe Massa.

The FIA jury is out, but for many the incident and judgement is as muddy as Kimi’s beached car.

So, Felipe Massa takes the big points. In 2nd, having finished the actually race in 3rd, is Nick Heidfeld. When the rain began to fall with so few laps to go, few took the chance to pit for wets, but Heidfeld did and was rewarded for his daring in incredible fashion as the German passed at least 4 drivers in the final lap. This left Fernando Alonso having to settle off the podium in 4th.

5th and 7th respectively were Toro Rosso’s two Sebs – Sebastian Vettel and Sebastien Bourdais. Taking the other top 8 positions were Robert Kubica in 6th and Timo Glock in 8th.

With Felipe Massa confirmed as the official winner of the Belgian GP, Massa edges closer to Lewis Hamilton - 76pts to 74pts. Raikkonen has now fallen behind Robert Kubica and must now surely be considered an outsider. Ferrari still lead the constructor's championship, but McLaren continue to chip away at the lead with both cars finishing in the points.

The SupaLiga story has taken another dramatic twist as we have a new leader – Team Oily. Having threatened the leading pair in Valencia, Oily has blown the doors wide open with a season best equalling score of 132pts. With 5 races to go, and F1 Aberdeen and Dynamo both scoring +100pts this race, this is a championship that will go to the wire. Auto-Dynamo, with 1 GP in Europe remaining, are currently the favourites for the European Cup.

This is only the second time in SupaLiga history that there have been 6 centurions. As well as the top 3, Ana’s ScotBordersF! (103pts), kleefarr’s Honda-Williams (111pts) and Tom34 (106pts) have all hit 3 figures. Misterminibus also had a great weekend, up 2 places to 10th and in the top 10 for the first time since Turkey.

Norm in the Pure FF1 Cup > F1 SupaAberdeen are now officially out of the Cup, finishing in 63rd and 61pts off the top 32.
