Nice, looks like an Eyed Hawkmoth. Eyed Hawk-moth

Interesting, your site claims

Flies from May to July in one generation.

So assuming its a bit too late to fly this year, does the caterpiller chrysalise for the next eight to nine months ?

Not really up on the lives of moths, just think it's late.

Perhaps, but since the eggs must be laid no later than July, I doubt they stick around until spring since the trees lose their leaves.

Makes sense, perhaps the chrysalis I posted last week was one of the brood.

Went a nice walk in the beautiful countryside less than one mile from our home, the Ribble Valley, went back to where I was born via the old churchyard and came across a young Roe deer a few yards from a busy dual carriageway

And after a 'little' dose of rain in south France, house survived seemingly ok, but a large piece of my nice garden was eaten up, mother nature was very hungry. Will take me ages and a fortune (insurance does not cover garden) to clean up those tons of stones and try to redirect the river to where it should be.

Well, well, others lost house and everything in it, could not even save their toothbrush, so am not complaining.
Good thing, the 130cm dish survived extreme wind ...and did not bring down the chimney I (dangerously) have it attached to.

I harvested the crop of 'sunflowers' earlier, since the rain has brought a plague of snails larger than usual.

Just over 1.7kgs, approximately double the spud mass that I put in the pots, the gastropods appear to have polished off at least the same amount, if not more in the last three months.

This was pulled from a vine / creeper a couple of days ago , cutting back some bushes and a large holly tree following a dish install. It was green when I took it down but is now changing rapidly from light green, through bright yellow to a deeper orange. About the size of a quail's egg.

I've no idea what the plant was is, but this 'fruit ' was some 30' up in the canopy and I couldn't waste the opportunity for some clever answers on here - And no, it's not a potato(e).

I'll leave it for a day or so to see what other colours it changes to, before opening up.

Citrus like inside? then I suspect they are citrus japonica otherwise known as cumquats. My mum used to have a small bush in her garden

No photo, but I saw one of our "local" robins down the garden this afternoon, but he then rapidly disappeared into the holly tree - OTOH, haven't seen any of the multitude of sparrows that were around several months ago, and usually resided in that holly tree. So, where have they gone?? :confused

The simple answer is no, practically all house sparrows are sedentary, this means that they are non-migratory and remain in virtually the same place throughout the year maybe a little less active in the winter months, but they are not far away.
