Old threads suggest to retro fit a drive I need to go back to the original Vu+ image, install the drive then flash back to Vix. Is this still the case?.

ViX will see the new fitted HDD. Once fitted Menu > Setup > System > Harddisk > Initialization. ViX will allow to carry on watching TV whilst the disk formats. To view progress press blue button. If anykind of error gets thrown up, redo the process. Before installing I'd make sure the HDD has no partitions on it, so its like a virgin drive.

Another thing to do is Software update. Blue button > ViX > Software update. This will fully update your image.

Once fully setup you can create an image backup to your HDD. Blue button > ViX > Image manager.

To backup installed Settings/bouqets, softcams, configs etc...Blue button > ViX > Backup manager.

One thing I dont like about the Vix image - when you try to do a manual scan the text is far too small on the screen. Its probably ok if you have a 32" screen but on anything else its not nice.

On my 19" monitor the frequency numbers are barely readable. Having it less than half screen width is hopeless.

Switched the box off for tonight - its giving me a headache squinting at the screen.

Dont think much of the Duo remote either. Theres no positive click like the 7020 remote gives you - its like pressing a button made of jelly. Its awful.

To be honest if I could remap a DB remote to operate a Vu+ I would cheerfully chuck this one in the recycling bin up the landfill site!

BTW - dont get me wrong - its a nice box - (easy to recover when you stuff it up!) These are minor gripes about specific bits of the functionality and looks. Even via rf the HD picture quality is v good.

There must be a way of changing the skin on the box and the way it looks, Thats tomorrows job as Im now happily listening to Absolute 80's on the 7020 :D

Lol. Trouble is I could never get blackhole working properly with my EMP diseqc's. The 8-way was hit and miss, and the 16 wouldn't work at all. Even cascades work properly on Vix. I'm not on the latest version, mine's on 2.2 I think, but it will not initialise a HDD, perhaps later images have fixed this.

Funny, I prefer the vu remote to that horrible clickiness of the DM remotes :D Each to their own. :)

Yah - Ive changed the skin from the unreadable VIX to a decent one

Menu - Setup - System - Skin Setup.

Ive switched to Magic for the time being which is readable on my monitor.
I'll have a look to see what else is available later, but I can work with this one.

The standard skin is fine on my 32" so it must be down to the small television. With some skins you get a lot more green screens.

That's strange. Why not make a copy image and reflash it with that. That way you will get your current config back and it should recognise the hard drive when you flash it. I put in my hard drive when I first got the receiver before ever using it, and then flashed it with VIX 1.3 and it found the hard drive straight away.

Perhaps it would Huevos, and if it wern't just eaiser at the time to plug the HDD into my debian PC and format it that way, I dare say I would have tried some more to get it to work. :) As everything else is working fine on the box I thought best to leave well enough alone. :)

I wouldn't worry about messing it up. Once you make a copy image it just returns it to how it was at the point the copy was made.

Or just save your current settings and load the latest version of the image over those settings.

I've saved all my DiSEqC settings in a spreadsheet just in case everything goes wrong one day.

Getting there :)

Ive updated to blackhole, installed the Hypercam plugin from sonic. FTP'd it over from the computer to the tmp folder It took me a while to find where to install it within the image

Ive shoved the TNTSat card into slot 1 & Ive got my French channels back :D

So whats your opinion of Blackhole then?

What in your opinion is the better image. Vix or Blackhole :D

I have started a Poll at the top of the section to find out everyones opinion of the available images out there.

Well its been rather a voyage of discovery this weekend. Having gone from bollixing up the box to watching encrypted channels via my TNTSat card, reflashed the box twice, learned how to ftp into it so I could load a cam, and this evening Ive managed to get dreamboxedit to talk to it so I can quickly make up my own bouquets.

Outstanding things to do -

fit a hdd
load a few more cams
find the skin Im happiest with and get it to display the info I want it to - not the minimalist info on many of the skins

and almost certainly nothing to do with the receiver - investigate why the signals are so low on this receiver (possibly a damaged cable somewhere....)

Plenty more questions to come, but I'll start new threads for them

BH - looks horrible, many of the screens are difficult to read on a small tv screen/monitor. It seems to have been forgotten not everyone has a 40"+ tv. The analogue & digital clocks on the standard skin are naff. The skins are a little better - most of them are readable, but its REALLY annoying to find the buttons do different things on different skins. Useful you can preview a skin before loading it. Insufficient contrast on the crypt info when its active on one of the skins (pale red on a white background is difficult to read) Easy to manually load addons - once you find where the manual loader routine is hidden.

Vix - standard skin looks better but too minimalist for my liking - wheres the frequency & crypt info??

Im trying hard to like BH but its not doing it for me atm.

The Vu+ wont be displacing my ancient old 7020 anytime soon.
