Odd things can happen on this band. As I found a few years ago, the band flatlined apart from a mystery appearance on 18325V.
Still check for anomalies, but haven't found anything like that since.

Hi
Yes the main problem with this band( k/Ka) is it's very prone to rain fade, very little water in the signal path will attenuate the signal much more than Ku.
Infact this band was really only thought of as Data carriers, fairly small up links, with massive downlink antennas,
(Hubs) which pick up the low level signals for you.
This section of the Ka BAND Astra 19 east satellite has it's transponders, both up and down zoned, to get coverage of Europe, there are 2 sections of one transponder, for UK giving about 100Mhz space.

So SNG was never really intended for this operation, using DVB S2, hence its pushing it a lot, but never the less does work, most of the time, with SIS Live having remotly full control over up link power, & frequency etc. of the ITV sng trucks.

18 325 Ghz downlink was at one time part of scrambled Playboy TV feed.

Also look out for the lesser used transponder sections like 18.573Ghz, I think mainly used by ITN.

Just to say as a guide to attenuation, the 18.566/ plus Media city Comms feed carrier, should peak out at +14dBm, The average prime focus feed dish of 1.8metre needs at least at +9 dBm carrier for it's sat receiver to be above the tuner thresshold(-55dBm) with the 2.4 meter parabolic dish used by most regions to downlink carrier of +8dBm will work.

They are of course helped by their sat receivers which have IF bandwidth of about 3/4 mHz, with either little range AFC or none, unlike most of our receivers AFC and IF bandwidth, they rely on a very stable L.O of the LNB.

What size dish would be best for Ku/Ka combined do you think?

Bit of a broad question really as there are a few options that fit into your question.

You could do Ka/Ku combined by using an Inverto Ka/Ku lnb at focus. The Ka frequencies covered would be in the Hor/Ver 21.2 - 22.2 GHz range Band D commonly known as. This would not get you the Newsnet frequencies of 18GHz as this uses a different band A lnb. The reflector size i would recommend for the Inverto Ka/Ku set-up for decent worthwhile results would be a 1.2mtr and metal prefered. A 1.5 metal would be ideal imo.

Hi John
The BT Tower, expect it's London BT Tower, is just an "On Pass" thats to say feeding the incoming signal of BT Tower out on the ITN news feeds to local ITV stations, not BT Tower operating an "uplink" on this frequncy off Astra 19.2 east.

John or whoever, keep an eye on this today, I'm getting that odd spectrum scan that I had some time ago occasionally, where the Newsnet TPs disappear and other TPs pop up.
I was too late to resolve them unfortunately.

I'll keep it on a loop for a while to see if it happens again.

Have got the trace showing the whole V band ..... Only 18511 V and Newsnet 18557 V up at the moment, nothing higher up Llew. Looks quite strange being just a black screen.

Crazyscan doesn't allow me to go down below 18300 to resolve the first TP with my LNB's, so I'm using the Promax to see that TP.
Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be anything to see on that one.

That ACM feed is a whopping signal , 18dB :eek:

I don't know what the ~18425V is, doesn't show up any parameters.

I don't know what your LO frequency is but have you tried changing the streamreader.ini file? My 6983 will do 250-2450MHz on a good day.
Here are my settings but I can't remember why I set LNBStk to 23000 but LNBMid was set to 9000 for inverted X band
Code:
;! Change IF range (default 950-2150MHz)
IFStart=250
IFStop=2500
LNBMid=9000
LNBStk=23000

Good idea. I'll try that s-band.
My LOFs for the two LNBs I have are 17250 (Norsat), 17350(Hughes).

There's absolutely nothing here at all on 18.425 V Llew, the trace is as flat as a pancake around that frequency now as well as about half an hour or so ago.

...And you still have the Newsnet feed?

I've tried both LNBs, and the Promax, still have those TPs up as I speak. I'll take the diseqc switch out to see if there's a problem giving me duff gen.

Took switch out of circuit. Ka LNB now directly connected. Red face time - Newsnet back where it always was.

Bah, the diseqc switch wasn't switching to the correct LNB. Apologies all round :oops:
