Yes, it does work quite well as a monitor/satellite receiver.i have used the v8 sat meter going fishing with a small plastic 35cm dish antenna.
Plus you re-charge with a 12v solar panel dc car battery charger when off grid.
The battery last for 2hours for tv viewing.
I keep one in the portable/caravan suitcase unit instead of the 'Ross' HD receiver that came as standard (which could have been a superb system if only the bugs had been ironed out).
The built in screen (and both connector outputs) show the battery level indicator in the top right.
