I've just arrived in Cyprus for a week. Staying in the same hotel as last year and there's no Sky News on 12207V now with it being on 1N's Pan-Euro beam with rapid eastern drop-off. I expect the same for 2F.

Welcome to the world of fringe reception,,,,, will get worse for us on the fringes if and when astra 2E gets live.

Yeah it's a pain, luckily we've still got 19.2E and 1W for FTA Sky News with better European coverage.
I thought they were taking it from one of those positions as BBC World News is also available, they obviously don't realise! Back in the 2D days they had the luxury of BBC1, gone with 1N.

Strathclyde over on DS has posted some interesting info regarding the changes.

He suggests that there will be a temporary move of transponders to 1N on 30th September (presumably out of the Eutelsat range), and then another move on 10th October to 2F (back into the old Eutelsat range).

He also said one of the carriage providers said, "This is the biggest technical change we've had to cope with since satellite began"

This is several hundred TV channels switching frequencies twice within two weeks.

Ive got a lot of respect for DS member Strathclyde. If he says its going to happen then its almost a certainty - he works in the tv industry - I think hes the chief exec at one of the smaller tv channels.

( No I dont know which one before anyone asks! :D)

Presumably 1N will have to have the underused "C-band" around 11000MHz illuminated to fit all the extra frequencies in safe out of harms way?

How many unused C band allocations are currently vacant? There's available spectrum close to the upper limit of the Ku band too which Eutelsat have previously used for SNG/OU use.

It certainly will be a challenge accommodating everyone unless they cram as many channels in to the minimum bitrate possible for a 10 day period to utilise the lowest number of transponders during the transition?

We dont have any definite details yet solly - Im just going on which tp's appear to be free. I think there are also 4 on 2A powered up but not in use.

Even if you get some extra channels during the swap-around you probably wont be keeping them!

16 transponders in total, 5 already in use by 2F.

If this is 2F's band why would the temporary transponders be on 1n?

Yes but what is the point? Band C is 2F's part of the spectrum.

Could it be something to do with uplink dishes that require them to use 1N for a bit?

Maybe some Teleports have limited antennas so having everything on 1N temporarily then migrating their EB1 Antenna to 2F provides better breathing space? It is odd that the C Band allocation, being 2F's would be used for 1N although some 1N transponders were illuminated in this spectrum prior to 2F's arrival.

Yes but what is the point? Band C is 2F's part of the spectrum.

Because under the disputed frequency agreement SES get their hands on 11450-11700 / 12500-12750. Therefore this is the area they will be powering up 2F for. If they DONT activate these frequencies presumably Eutelsat would have a strong claim for revocation of the agreement for non use.

The ITU dont like filings to be made for sat frequency slots that are subsequently unused due to the scarcity of spectrum these days. SES cant just move stuff to the frequencies around 110xx and say - oh we want to use the higher stuff later.

This is a high risk game for Sky - if channels disappear for a few hours due to a foul up or breakdown at one of the uplinks then the general public will blame Sky for the problem - its only us more technically aware folk that would realise the fault is elsewhere.

I wonder if Sky will step in to offer support to the uplink providers where they can to avoid this?

There's been a few further TP moves today for various channels, looks like 12560H is also now being cleared out.
