It's not just Dewalt - all of the tool suppliers do the same sort of thing (certainly Bosch do) - but the important thing is that either those suppliers still supply appropriate batteries for well-after tools that are replaced by new types, or/and that knock-off clones are available from other sources. That's sometimes true for large brand name tools with a long sales history (I have some pretty old B&D 14V drills for which I was able to get half/decent clone replacements a couple of years ago) but rarely true for tools from smaller brand names &/or with shorter sales lives.

Also, you probably stand a better chance of getting of getting both batteries and other spares for the big brands' "pro" tools than for their "consumer" versions because the suppliers want to keep pro users buying their tools "brand loyal" for a long time.

For example, my 10-15 yr old (or even older!) Makita palm sander finally "died" last year after heavy use. On stripping the tool down, I found it was just the switch that had failed, but that it could also use some new brushes, and a replacement for the rubber block around which you wrap the sandpaper or glass paper. Did some searches and found that Makita still supply a virtually identical tool now, and that many of the parts for the new one are just upgraded versions of the old parts and will fit the older machines - and that some of the tool spares suppliers could provide all the bits (and the exploded diagrams!) for me to repair the tool back to nearly "as new" condition. Got the bits and rebuilt the tool, and it now runs "like a train" again - for about 1/3rd the cost of a new sander.

Good to hear mate, sick of the "just bin it" society the retailers/companies want us to adopt in order to fill their pockets quicker again. On the subject of the Aldi/Lidl drills, both are 20V and the Aldi one advertised for some reason "Samsung batteries" like thats a thing to be proud of........ Galaxy Note any one? Lol

A further example of Lidl's cretinous "customer support" w.r.t. that jigsaw I mentioned a couple of weeks back when I asked them how to get spare blades for it. At the time, they asked me what the IAN number of the saw was, and I told them that, since I hadn't bought one yet then I couldn't tell them that - and told them the same again a week later!

Today I got ANOTHER email asking what the IAN number is!

My verbatim and "unexpurgated" reply was as follows:

"READ THE ****ING HISTORY OF THIS ENQUIRY BEFORE YOU ASK A STUPID QUESTION LIKE THAT!

AS I KEEP TELLING LIDL – I HAVE NOT YET BOUGHT A JIGSAW (AND IN FACT I CAN’T EVEN FIND ONE IN OUR LOCAL STORES IN HAYES!). ALL I WANTED TO KNOW IS HOW I COULD OBTAIN SPARE BLADES IF I NEEDED THEM (WHICH I ALMOST CERTAINLY WOULD!!!!) IF I DID EVENTUALLY BUY ONE.

THEREFORE I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA OF WHAT THE IAN NUMBER MIGHT BE!"

I think the Lidl site currently has some spare batteries ATM , and so I guess you should consider buying some before they "disappear"!

Comes as totally no surprise that I haven't heard a "peep" from Lidl "Customer Support" since I sent them the above!

It is actually, Samsung make the best 18650 cells in my opinion, I've got a few here, Sony are 2nd.

Theres a section near the rear of the instruction leaflet (Some may prefer the term book but it's not thick enough to be called such IMHO, no worse than others including my DeWalt) where they tell you the actual manufacturers and a web link to buy batteries for said drill mate, they should have been as fourth coming with the Jigsaw they offered.

Yeah? Mind Sony had the exploding Laptop chargers? lol But in all seriousness Samsung are one of the biggest manufacturers of flash memory type devices such as USB sticks ect as well also.

I REALLY want the Lidl bench disk sander!

Yes it is, about 4 years old now, Never missed a beat, regular switching over between 2 batteries has kept there/it's life.

They do sell adaptors to use newer batteries, but it costs the same price as a new tool!

Yeah that's right for the bare 18 volt drill. That's why I went for this Lidl drill, new tech batteries, 2Ah is pretty much the standard and for £39.99p if it sees two, three years I have definitely got my moneys worth.

Well the real test will be once I load the 60cm masonry drill bit I got from the work and set about boring a hole thru two layers of brick, a layer of foam and a wee bit of rough cast lol
