Following an hour of freezing rain last night there is now a small thaw on round here. But I suspect come 4pm the remaining liquid will turn to sheet ice, ready to give more trouble.

(Happy birthday Tivu)

Same here .............. positively balmy and I've cleared a channel for the melt water to bypass my massive mound of snow outside the drive and to find its way to the storm drain.

(Thanks, CH)

According to the media there is meant to be a thaw today. :-per

The car roof started icing up when the sun was at its peak earlier today...

There was some rain here today, and plenty of dripping snow, so everything's going to be slippery and icy tomorrow if there's a freeze tonight... :(

yeah, was reading local paper and was a piece about 2, 19 year olds died when the car went off the road due to ice.

as the council wont fill up the grit bin so we can put it on the road ourselves, i wouldn't like to think of what could happen outside in the street.

it also doesn't help people panic buying up the toilet roll and other items in the local co-op but roads are pretty clear so i'm surprised its not been all stocked up.

Its probably worth mentioning this now the temperatures are going up a bit. Be careful around roofs with large snow accumulations on them. A teenage lass has been seriously hurt round here when snow & ice avalanched off a roof and landed on her.

Thin sheet of glass like ice everywhere right now, but temperature has shot up to 2C in the last half-hour, so all should be well for the Newspaper run at 10am.

We're setting off soon on a visit to Porthmadog to visit one of my wife's cousins.

This is one of the unnecessary trips that the police have been warning against but I think we'll be OK!

Take heart, Paul: I've been out to Thirsk this morning and the thaw is gathering pace.

Main roads problem free.

I have driven on roads that I later discovered the police had described as impassable. 6 inches of virgin snow is very easy to drive on!!

Ice is the real problem, but I bet all the main routes will have been well gritted, as Tivu said they should be problem free.

BBC Scotland have a special half hour programme about the freeze, tonight at 6. Imaginatively titled Frozen Scotland. I don't know if it will be half an hour of reporting around Scotland or half an hour of bores moaning around a table. The reporting might be interesting, to see what state various places are in.

Meanwhile near Assendelft  (Amsterdam), the groundsmen are preparing the outdoor rink. It's not quite ready yet, his big clogs are cracking the ice, but it will not be long until the ice is a few inches deep. The footage of skaters is from last year.

Been out knocking off loads of icicles (No, not bicycles) as they look potentially lethal - Fortunately we live in a bungalow, so they are mainly accessible, but I did get struck by a fragment and cut my hand. An entire one landing on ones bonce would not be very clever.

It'd help if I had one in the first place... :-rofl2

Closest I have is those British Gas stick-on thermal plastic things that measure between +10 to +30... :p

Just been walking the neighbours dog for an hour. Thermometer says 4C but it feels sub-zero!

Thawing out with large mug of tea and a brace of Choc Chip Cookies.
