If anyone has any doubt about how bad conditions are in Scotland atm - all the SPL games on Saturday have been postponed due to the ongoing travel chaos. The pitches would be playable due to the undersoil heating but the safety of the travelling spectators cant be guaranteed.

Most of the SFL lower league games are expected to follow tomorrow.

All but one of the SFL league games have gone as well now - and that one will be undergoing a pitch inspection tomorrow.

Just looking at our nearest Met (Topcliffe) and it gives -16.8C at 07.00 today.

My own outdoor spirit thermometer gives -4C right now

Bored of endless snow and arctic temperatures?

Well look forward to the floods. Yes indeed, even a slow thaw is likely to cause havoc in hilly parts like ours as the melt from the hills feeds the streams which feed the rivers in our low lying plains.

Normally, about two or three days after temperatures rise, the problems start.

It bottomed out at -12.6C, although there have been a few reports on the radio of folk seeing below -20C on their car thermometers

Its a tropical -7C outside atm!

If you look at what scientists have written about the temperature in the "Little Ice Age" they seem to think they had accurate measurements in 1650.

The new record lows mentioned on the news are taken with modern digital instruments which are bound to be more accurate than those used 30 years ago. More media codswallop.

So I think your spirit thermometer is WRONG!!!

Wasn't too cold here last night, around -3°C I think. Hovering around +3°C now. Still a covering of snow slowly thawing in the sun. I'm hoping that the roads to Rennes are ok by Sunday as my stepdaughter and her boyfriend are coming for a week. Actually I should be more concerned about Southampton Airport being open!!

Got cold here, don't know how cold though, but the boiler's condensate discharge pipe froze up again (last time it did that was earlier in the year, in the last "big freeze"), the noise it made was ungodly, not a rumble, but a constant deep-bass tone which was probably loud enough to wake the dead...

Solution, pull the pipe off and stick a bucket under it, let the boiler discharge into that... :-rofl2

Satellite: 88cms DiSEqC motorised dish (self-installed) covering 62E - 37.5W; Technomate TM6900HD Super Combo & TM5400 via IF loopthrough. Also fixed 70cms Raven dish (monoblock 13E / 19E) as backup.

Hello everybody

This is the first time that I've ever tried attaching pictures to a message, so please be kind if I get it wrong! :)

I know that snow has been falling long and hard elsewhere in the UK for some time now. However snow in my part of the world is unusual, and after having no snow at all until 1 December, it arrived with a vengence.

I have lived on the West Sussex coast all my life (33 years) and this is the heaviest single snowfall that I ever remember. The snow we had at the start of 2010 was described as the heaviest in 20 years, so this has surely taken over the record.

Attached are two photos that I took yesterday morning. The elliptical dish has a monoblock on it for 19 and 13E (my 'reserve' dish), and the main motorised 88cms dish is pointing at Hellas Sat 2. I'm not going to try moving it for the moment, just in case the motor is frozen! For the time being, I'm contenting myself with 19E, 13E and Freeview.

I hope this is of interest.
Kind regards,

Ed

Nothing dramatic here today apart from the sub zero tempreatures first thing. The top of the bird bath capsized with the weight of accumulated snow and by the time I finished digging the car out and pushing the snow off the roof to take SWMBO down to work the front of the Fiesta was buried up to its bonnet!

:-rofl2

Frighteningly cold all day yesterday: By 5pm the road was like glass.

Today, however, it's nearly Sheila Ferguson (Heading for Three Degrees .................) and it has taken a quick sweep to get the car ready for SWMBO's foray to do her Christmas Shopping Bonanza.

I shall spend my Birthday huddled in front of the Portable Gas Heater in the Lounge.

Woke up to rain this morning and as usual I took the dogs up to the top of my drive first thing. The shared road to the T with the main road looked clear so I thought I'd survey driving conditions...........BANG, as soon as wellies set foot on what I thought was tarmac, flat on my back. Not suitable footwear for black ice!! At least it answered my query!

Luckily no broken bones, just bruised flesh and pride. Temperature just hovering about +2°C and unless it warms up a bit I can't see things improving. Shame as I had a shopping trip planned this afternoon.

Yes Tivù, I send you birthday greetings as well. You aren't mentioned "in post" though, or is this a desire for anonimity?
