And before anyone asks thats fttc - fttp is not available out here in the sticks, although it is 5 miles away in Jedburgh or Kelso :( Our piddling little exchange will no doubt be one of the last ones in the area to be done

Nope. nothing like that round here. I believe one of the neighbours uses a 4G dongle but they are elderly & are likely to be light users.

The village has got less than 100 people in it - our electoral roll is around 80 according to the polling place tellers last time I asked so fixed wireless is very low priority for the providers. There are a few schemes further out round here but they are only found up the very remote valleys in the foothills of the Cheviots where you would never get broadband over the copper wires

A friend of mine is in a similar situation as you are in Devonshire sticks - ADSL is max 4mpbs and weak 4G signal. He splashed out on Starlink, which, he says, is decent and I think he gets up to 100mbps on it?

The very idea of old folk fiddling with a dongle brings tears to the eyes :-wow

I've just bought a ZTE U50 5G mobile router (£170 Amazon) with a Vodafone PAYG unlimited data sim (£15 per month) primarily for use in our campervan. I've been very impressed with the speed and reliability and am now considering dumping Plusnet when my contract ends, worth considering if you've got a decent mobile signal and a slow broadband provider although I'm getting 70 mbs with plusnet.ScreenShot Tool -20240613171100.png

Fibre has come to the village at long last. And of course the first install date a month ago was cancelled when the crew arrived & found the fibre from the pole to the cottages had been terminated at the far end of our row of cottages & they couldnt do the full run that day......

Soooo having done all the legwork & had my fingers crossed we were going to be the first fibre install in the village the lass next door snuck in last week & got hers installed :-doh Although to be fair our fibre was run at the same time & left coiled round her Sky dish! Last weekend we were trundling along at a dismal 7 meg inbound & 0.5 meg outbound. Tonight we have:

Its bouncing up & down a bit - Ive seen it up as high as 150 meg inbound, but the outbound is pretty stable. But that'll do me!! :-respekt

In our row of 6 cottages 2 of us already have fttp installed, 2 are looking into it with one almost definite, 1 chap is planning to move so hes not interested & no idea about the last one - Ive not seen him around to chat to for a while.

Good stuff. They are still promising FTTP here, but progress is glacial. Fortunately, we do have FWA which is pretty decent at 30 Up 30 Down.

Once they've all signed up you will probably find your data speed ends up in the single figures again.

One of my friends living in the arse end of nowhere (middle of Devon) has no chance of FTTx. He is just one of two houses for about a mile. His non-21CN BT line is offering him a paltry 4Mbit with no 4G service. He bit the bullet and went with Musk-link. Expensive but that was the only option.

My setup in the lost woods of south France. After relying longtime on 3G from a mast far away (35 km, around 5 mb\s), 4G arrived and is quite good (ping & reliabilty) as we got the new mast some km's away. 30 - 40 mb down, 5 - 8 up, all that's needed.

Using extra data sim in router, on the same plan as the phone, 200 GB\month, never managed to use that up. While in Norway\EU (even China, US, Israel, Canada included), 50 GB\month roaming which suffise as my only internet connection = no fibre etc and a cheap 1 GB plan on my norwegian sim, 99% data use is on the french sim (hotspot\wifi).

Anyway, it works > reliabilty nr 1, speed much, much less important. Anything around 3 mb\s pr. person connected = Netflix in HD.

Bloody hell mate, after all these years of struggling with single figures or less, you must feel like you've suddenly leapfrogged into the future! So glad fibre finally came your way.

I had CityFibre installed in Maidenhead in the spring after waiting for what seemed like forever for them to come to our town. Now, Openreach are finishing off installing in our area as well. For many years I was stuck with <30Mbps VDSL and suddenly now we have a choice of two fibre providers offering 1Gbps+
