I agree Ana, it was a great race, Kimi's accident was brilliant :D Apparently Alonso went out through a loose wheel nut, and not the suspension as I thought. If thats correct, thats one hell of a cock-up on the part of the Renault pit-crew.

Things return to form in qualifying in Turkey, as Ferrari secure the front row, and Renault occupy the second row of the grid for tomorrow’s race.

It was Felipe Massa, however, who captured pole position for Ferrari, the first of his career, as Michael Schumacher couldn’t push all the way on used tyres. Alonso qualified close behind in 3rd, and team mate Fisichella was 4th.

Toyota continue their good form in qualifying, with Ralf Schumacher placing in 5th, and BMW-Sauber also done well again – Heidfeld 6th, Kubica in 9th. Conqueror of Hungary, Jenson Button is 7th, next to McLaren pilot Kimi Raikkonen (8th), and Mark Webber slipped into 10th.

The below par performers of the day were Jarno Trulli (13th), Rubens Barrichello (14th), and most notably David Coulthard, who failed to get beyond the first session, in 17th – it appears his luck for getting clear track space ran out on this occasion. One good piece of driving which may well go unnoticed was that of Christijan Albers, who managed to make the second session in his Midland, eventually qualifying in 16th.

F1 has to get it's act together IMHO

Only a few teams have any chance!
Overtaking during pit stop, again!
Tyres are more important than drivers!

If it continues, then less and less will watch it, already a straw poll with friends would suggest it's nowhere near as popular as it was a few years back.

Another action packed race this weekend, with another first-time winner, this time it was Felipe Massa who took the chequered flag.

The Brazilian lead from the start, and after the safety car which came out following Antonio Liuzzi’s retirement had spoilt team mate Michael Schumacher’s and Renault racer Fernando Alonso’s race fuel tactic, he was never truly in any risk of losing it. During the safety car period, Massa, Schumi, and Alonso pitted on the same lap, and it was this that allowed Alonso to overtake Schumi for 2nd as the German qued behind Massa.

This set-up a thrilling finale, as with 15 laps to go, Michael Schumacher was closing in on Alonso, who clearly had difficulty in breaking in slow corners, but the German’s own lack of pace in faster corners ultimately cost him the opportunity of a real passing attempt. However, had the race been just one lap longer that may not have stopped the Ferrari pilot from overtaking him, as in the final corners of the race, he came very close indeed, and finished a mere 10th of a second behind the Spaniard.

Jenson Button had a far quieter Sunday than in the rain of Hungary, finishing 4th, followed by Pedro de la Rosa, whose 1 stop strategy paid dividends. Behind this pair, a real battle for places had been on all afternoon, with the final order being Giancarlo Fisichella in 6th, Ralf Schumachr in 7th, Barrichello in 8th, but Trulli (9th) and Webber (10th) missed out on points.

The first corner spin of Fisichella at the beginning had it’s victims, the most prominent of which was the unlucky Kimi Raikkonen, who in a attempt to avoid collision with traffic ahead, slowed and took a wide line in the run-off area, only to be rammed from behind. Although a visit to the pits appeared to repair the damage, most visible of which was a punctured left rear tyre, he eventually retired just a lap later.

Drivers' Championship - http://www.formula1.com/archive/driver/2006.html

Alonso’s 2nd place finish, and Schumacher’s resulting 3rd, has opened up a crucial 12 point margin (108 to 96pts) in the chase for the title.

Constructors' Championship - http://www.formula1.com/archive/team/2006.html

Massa’s brilliant maiden victory has reduced the difference to only 2 points now, Renault on 160pts and Ferrari on 158pts, and with 4 races remaining it is sure to be a fight to the finish.

In SupaLiga, ‘Speedy Devils’ (368pts) lead is cut slightly to 22pts from ‘pipjack’ (346pts), but the top two break even further away from the rest as ‘Tom34’ (281pts) can only maintain a 4 point advantage over ‘IG Racing’ (277pts).

‘Wolf bangers’ (267pts) fall one additional point from IG, but are not under any increased threat from the chasing pack, as ‘Honda/Williams’ rise 2 places to 6th with 263pts, ‘F1 Aberdeen’ (262pts) fall 1 to 7th, as do ‘Burnin’ Rubber’ (261pts – 8th).

‘bronking buckos’ jump up 1 to 9th (255ptss), ‘Team Oily’ (254pts) suffer a drop from 8th to 10th, following now 7pts behind are ‘Draconigen’ (247pts), who rise an impressive 3 places to 11th, overtaking ‘Team Carros’ (241pts).

Chasing behind are the teams tied at 13th, all on 237pts – ‘Super25’ rise from 15th, ‘GameboyUK’ maintain position, and ‘Jose`s Marinos’ drop disappointing from 12th considering their recent excellent form. The ‘hypotheticals’ (200pts), ‘The Smeg ups’ (190pts), and ‘Bussola's dream team’ (175pts) all stay rooted to the bottom of the table at 16th, 17th, and 18th.

I have to disagree. I think anyone whose watched the last two races would agree that is it possible to overtake in F1.

However, I would except that technology as become too important, but the cutbacks in technology in 2008 should go some way to cutting this. You know F1 cars are too easy to drive when Vettel, a 19yo with little GP experience, can be top of the timing sheets in Friday practice on his debut O-Ha . But its still not easy to be successful in F1, otherwise Massa and Fisichella would be as competitive as Schumacher and Alonso.

They cut back every year and the cars go faster and faster. Have you had a look at a F1 steering wheel? It's like a computer game controller.

Alonso was using boost and rev control in the last race to keep the faster car behind.

They have traction control and can adjust the type pressure - what next.

Why do we have a drivers championship? Maybe it should be a controllers championship! The overtaking in the last two races was between the slower cars, once you get near the top three it looks like pits stops will determine the winner.

I think if Schumi leaves then so will a lot more of the viewers.

it is these kinds of controls which will be withdrawn from 2008. also, it is harder to overtake at the top as the top drivers are naturally better at avoiding being overtaken.

can't believe how close it still is! it'd only take for one of the top drivers to have a spin in session one, and it could change everything. Good work bronk

The events of Saturday have set-up what will hopefully be a thrilling race at Monza.

With mere seconds to go, Kimi Raikkonen stole pole position from the clutches of Michael Schumacher. The Finn, who it seems is destined to replace the German legend next season (announcement due after this weekend’s race), will be hoping to carry his good qualifying performance through to record McLaren’s first win of the season, with only four races remaining.

This left Schumi 2nd on the grid, but he may not be sweating on the performance of Alonso in tomorrow’s race as he may have been.

The reigning world champion had an atrociously unlucky final session of qualifying, first overshooting the first chicane and picking up debris in the process which caused a right-rear puncture. Two pit stops were needed to get the right tyres and repair bodywork, leaving him needing to blitz his outlap just the make it before the chequered flag so he could record a fast lap. That he done, putting down the 5th fastest time. However, his efforts were in vain, as the race stewards penalised him for unintentionally blocking Massa, who was on a hot lap, and as a result is a net 10th place on the grid. This slots him behind Renault team mate Giancarlo Fisichella (9th).

Although Felipe Massa looked fast throughout, he could only manage the 4th fastest time. He is behind Nick Heidfeld (3rd), whose BMW-Sauber team had an encouraging qualifying session, as Robert Kubica is 7th on the grid. Honda also find both their drivers in the top 10; Button 5th, Barrichello 8th. Pedro de la Rosa, 7th on the grid, completes the top end of the grid

Those less successful include Red Bull Racing, who looked to be lacking pace, with Coulthard and Klien 14th and 16th respectively. Toyota also disappointed; Trulli 11th, Ralf Schumacher 13th, whilst MarkWebber (19th) suffered the indignity of being knocked out in the first qualifying session.

Alonso sent back to 10th after holding up Massa.

Renault don't like it when they get caught out when the stewards checked the telemetry of the cars.

But then they did like it at Monaco when they called Schumi a cheat.

You can't have it both ways...

Will Schumi announce his retirement? Let's see after the race....

Although Michael Schumacher stormed to another Ferrari home win, it was the announcement of his retirement for which this 2006 Italian GP will be best remembered. The announcement was made in an official statement released right after the race, and this was shortly followed by another announcement that Kimi Raikkonen will be joining Ferrari to partner Felipe Massa for 2007.

As for the race itself, Raikkonen lead from the start until the first pit stop, when he went in one lap before Schumi, allowing the German to gain the necessary distance to leave the pits in front his 2007 replacement. From that moment on, Schumi was in full control and took all 10 points.

Schumi’s dream day was in stark contrast to Fernando Alonso’s nightmare. Clearly lacking the speed to overtake, he had to push his engine right from the off in an attempt to make up places resulting from his grid demotion by the stewards, and so it proved his downfall when on lap 43 his engine finally gave in.
The whole Renault team’s frustration was obvious, culminating in Flavio Briatore’s sensation remark that the sport was ‘fixed’ – an FIA investigation is in progress (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/5332052.stm).

Other than the fireworks of the title contenders, it was a fairly quiet weekend, although the magnificent performance of the BMW-Sauber team may unfortunately mostly go unnoticed. In only his third F1 Grand Prix, Robert Kubica took 3rd place in a determined performance, whilst team mate Nick Heidfeld guided his machine to a respectable 8th place, in front of the chasing Ferrari of Felipe Massa.

Giancarlo Fisichella brought Renault some light relief by finishing in 4th, the Honda pair of Button and Barrichello took 5th and 6th, and Jarno Trulli finished in 7th.

Drivers' Championship - http://www.formula1.com/archive/driver/2006.html

The victory of Schumi (106pts) and the DNF of Fernando Alonso (108pts) have set-up a rousing finale to the end of the season. Alonso reckons Shanghai and Suzuka will favour the Renaults, while the final race at Interlagos will not be favourable to Ferrari, but without a win since June in Canada, the pressure is well and truly on the Spaniard and the French outfit to recapture the form of the opening half of the Championship.

Constructors' Championship - http://www.formula1.com/archive/team/2006.html

Alonso’s engine blow-out has tipped the title chase in favour of the Maranello outfit – Ferrari now lead 168pts to Renault’s 165.

In SupaLiga, the race for the title now seems as close as that of Schumi-Alonso duel, with leaders‘Speedy Devils’ (387pts) gaining a below par 19pts in Italy, thus reducing the gap to just 7points from the chasing ‘pipjack’ team (380pts). Can the Devils, who were Warm Up Champions of SupaLiga and having been leading the main championship since San Marino, really lose the championship at this late stage?

Tom34 (303pts) remain in 3rd, and are still only 4pts above the 4th placed opposition. However, the opposition in 4th has changed, as ‘bronking buckos’ collected a massive 44 points, 299pts in total, catapulting them an equally massive 5 places up from 9th. That demoted ‘IG Racing’ (296pts) back to 5th, now only 3pts in front of ‘Honda/Williams’ who stay in 6th on 293pts.

Not far behind are ‘Burnin’ Rubber’ (286pts), who swap 8th for 7th with ‘F1 Aberdeen’ (283pts). Only 3pts behind are ‘Team Oily’ (280pts), who rise 1 place to 9th. Behind in 10th are ‘Wolf bangers’ (275pts), who suffer an embarrassing 5 place drop, only picking up 8 points this GP. ‘Team Carros’ (264pts) rise 1 to 11th.

‘Super25’ (257pts) go up from 13th to 12th, tying in that place with ‘Draconigen’, who slump from 11th. ‘GameboyUK’ (252pts) fall 1 to 14th, ‘Jose`s Marinos’ (250pts) drop an additional place to 15th.

And finally at the bottom, ‘The Smeg ups’ (220pts – 16th) and ‘Bussola's dream team’ (213pts – 17th) launch a recovery to overtake the ‘hypotheticals’ (210pts – 18th) – they’ll be hoping it remains that way for the rest of the season.

 I hadn't realised that, though luckily I dont have Villeneuve. The same is also true of de la Rosa replacing Montoya and the various changes at Super Aguri. Can't believe teletext didnt send out a email explaining the change
