Looks like tyres could decide this vital race, Alonso on pole with Schmi back in sixth.

Bridgestone users struggled with the Michelins proving the better tyre in the wet.

Amazingly, Schumacher was 1.2seconds off the pace and still managed to grab sixth!

Coultard is 8th on the grid.

More rain is predicted.

Official Race Result - http://www.formula1.com/race/result/765/8.html

The Drivers’ Championship is now neck-and-neck, as Michael Schumacher took victory in a wet weekend in Shanghai.

Starting from 6th on the grid on supposedly inferior Bridgestone tyres, the soon-to-be departing legend made his way up the field, and when Renault’s tyre choice for Alonso proved to be the wrong on the first stop, Schumacher clearly had the upper hand. A lack of grip reduced Alonso’s lead, at one point more than 25 seconds over the next nearest driver, to nothing, and when it became clear that Fisichella could no longer defend him, Schumi quickly gained the lead.

However, we’re it not for a threading problem on the right rear tyre on the second pit stop, Alonso could well have caught the German up in the closing stages. But it was not to be, and now we head to Japan, two races remaining, with the challenging duo level on points.

Fisichella, having been caught in the title fight, would finish on the 3rd step of the podium. The Italian was well ahead of the next pack of drivers, who had there own dramas on the final lap. Button made a audacious overtaking manoeuvre past Heidfeld, which was complicated by the back trailing Sato, as the Jap held up the young BMW driver, causing an approaching Barrichello to collide with the German’s rear. Button went on to capture 4th, de la Rosa capitalised on the incident to take 5th, Rubens came in in 6th despite damaging his nose cone, and the unlucky Heidfeld could only manage 7th.

Webber secured the final points paying position after battling with Coulthard, who just missed out in 9th. Another to have suffered bad luck was the brave Robert Kubica, who took the bull by the horns and tried dry tyres, only to find the conditions unforgiving on his out-lap, necessitating a return to the pits to put intermediates back on.

Drivers' Championship - http://www.formula1.com/archive/driver/2006.html

All square on 116 points, Suzuka and Interlagos will witness the greatest climax to a season in a long time.

Constructors' Championship - http://www.formula1.com/archive/team/2006.html

Massa’s DNF condemned Ferrari to relinquish the lead in the Championship which they had only gained the race before in Italy. It’s still on a knife-edge though: Renault 179pts to Ferrari’s 178pts.

In SupaLiga, ‘pipjack’ are now gunning down ‘Speedy Devils’ lead, now just 5 POINTS, 416 to 411 points. Will two races be enough to topple the Devils?

‘bronking buckos’ continue their amazing recent form, claiming to 3rd on 339pts. ‘Honda/Williams’ (332pts) are also flying high, rocketing up to 4th from 6th. Such upward movement requires others to take the drop, and it is ‘Tom34’ who suffer, going down to 5th from 3rd on 327pts. ‘IG Racing’ also fall further, down to 6th now with 320pts. ‘F1 Aberdeen’ (317pts) and ‘Burnin’ Rubber’ (316pts) continue their merry dance, again exchanging places with the Scottish outfit in 7th and The Rubbers in 8th. ‘Team Oily’ maintain 9th, but are a tad further behind point wise on 311pts.

This weekend’s top performers are ‘Jose`s Marinos’, who rise 5 places, now tying for 10th with ‘Wolfs bangers’, both with 287pts. 1 point behind them are ‘Super25’, whom stay in 12th. ‘Draconigen’ (282pts) fall 1 to 13th, whilst ‘Team Carros’ (280pts) have a disappointing weekend, falling from 11th to 14th.

At the foot of the table, ‘GameboyUK’ (269pts) 1 more place to 15th, ‘The Smeg ups’ stay 16th (235pts), and the ‘hypotheticals’ (224pts – 17th) are doing the Grim Reaper impression again, taking down ‘Bussola's dream team’ (222pts – 18th).

Thanks Gamboy, by the time I saw the qualifying (1am last night!), there was no point in posting a proper report. 'O'-red ITV!!!!! Why couldn't they put it on ITV1, all they were showing was kiddies programmes. Failing that, why not ITV2? I know ITV4 is not on until 7pm, but what about Men & Motors, when does that start? It is actually a disgrace. I'd rather pay £30 or so a year, and now you'd get everything, practice sessions as well (not that I'd watch them, but still).

Official Race Result - http://www.formula1.com/race/result/768/8.html

In the most amazing turn-around in a Grand Prix weekend, Fernando Alonso now has one hand on the title, taking the winner’s trophy in Japan at the expense of Michael Schumacher, who had the most horrid luck – retiring with engine failure for the first time since the 2000 French GP.

Alonso, 5th on the grid and looking merely for damage limitation, had a good start, overtaking Jarno Trulli at the first corner. However, his progress was temporarily halted by the other Toyota of Ralf Schumacher, but the Ferraris, now being lead by Schumacher, weren’t able to build up a lead which many expected due to the good qualifying pace of the Bridgestone tyres. Once Ralf had his first pit stop, Alonso was able to catch up with the Ferraris, and after his first stop, was ahead of Massa, and chasing Schumi. The real drama came when Schumi made his final stop, as when he returned to the track on his out-lap, his engine relented, and the Spaniard lead from then until the chequered flag.

Massa would finish in 2nd, more than 16 seconds behind the World Champion. Fisichella came in 3rd in an emotional race for him, having lost his best friend during the week. He dedicated his podium finish to his late friend.

Jenson Button fought his way to a second consecutive 4th place, just in front of Raikkonen in 5th, who performed well considering his lowly grid position of 11th. The Toyota’s of Trulli and Ralf came in 6th and 7th respectively to complete a good weekend for the Japanese outfit on home soil, whilst 8th and 9th was taken by another double act in the form of the BMW-Saubers of Heidfeld and Kubica.

Drivers' Championship - http://www.formula1.com/archive/driver/2006.html

Alonso need only score a single point to defend the title.

Constructors' Championship - http://www.formula1.com/archive/team/2006.html

Although the Driver’s Championship may look all but over, the team title is still up for grabs, Renault (195pts) have re-established a lead over Ferrari (186pts).

In SupaLiga, the ‘Speedy Devils’ have pulled their finger out, and look to have sewn up the title but for a disaster in Brazil, 441 points on the board for them. ‘pipjack’ (424pts), having rallied in recent races, saw their progress grind to a halt, recording only 13pts.

‘IG Racing’ earned an impressive 38pts to soar up the league from 6th to equal 3rd, a lofty position they haven’t held since the Canadian GP in June, with ‘bronking buckos’, both now with 358pts. ‘F1 Aberdeen’ (347pts) move up 2 places to 5th, ‘Tom34’ (345pts) falling again to 6th. ‘Honda/Williams’ (341pts) couldn’t secure themselves in 4th, and drop to 7th.

The top 6 ambitions of ‘Team Oily’ look to be on the wane, as they are now 16pts behind them with 329pts, raising 1 to 8th. Perhaps more stark is the fall from grace of ‘Burnin’ Rubber’ points-wise, as although they fall only 1 pace to 9th, scoring only 8pts (324pts overall) may well prevent them from recovering their previous top 6 position.

My ‘Super25’ team (321pts) enter the top 10 for the first time, garnering 35pts this race. ‘Team Carros’ (312pts) also go up, from 14th to 11th, but ‘Jose`s Marinos’ (308pts) suffer a disappoint slide, down 2 to 12th, whilst ‘Wolfs bangers’ (306pts) endure an even greater dip, down 3 to 13th.

‘Draconigen’ (301pts) plummet down the league for the 3rd race in-a-row, now 14th. No change at the bottom this weekend with ‘GameboyUK’ (272pts – 15th), ‘The Smeg ups’ (268pts – 16th), ‘hypotheticals’ (261pts – 17th), and ‘Bussola's dream team’ (246pts) all maintaining a steady pace.

… so, we go into the final race with the league sizing up into these groups of teams competing for position:

1. Speedy Devils – 441pts
2. pipjacks – 424pts
--------- 66pt GAP
3. bronking buckos – 358pts
=3. IG Racing – 358pts
5. F1 Aberdeen – 347pts
6. Tom34 – 345pts
7. Honda/Williams – 341pts
--------- 12pt GAP
8. Team Oily – 329pts
9. Burnin’ Rubber – 324pts
10. Super25 – 321pts
--------- 9pt GAP
11. Team Carros – 312pts
12. Jose`s Marinos – 308pts
13. Wolfs bangers – 306pts
14. Draconigen – 301pts
--------- 29pt GAP
15. GameboyUK – 272pts
16. The Smeg ups – 268pts
17. hypotheticals – 261pts
18. Bussola's dream team – 246pts

funny you say that, i've been wondering how you would combine the two leagues, should we just add the points up? technically, the points totals in SupaLiga should be superior, being as its the race points, whereas LOG is the qualifying. PM me on that one bronk

The departing Michael Schumacher was unable to add to his career total of 68 pole positions in Brazil. In fact, he was unable to set a time at all in the final qualifying session when his Ferrari engine developed a fuel pressure problem. Many fans will hope that the legend is able to put on a final demonstration of his timeless skill by racing through the pack in the race on Sunday.

The cloud did have a silver lining for Ferrari however, as Felipe Massa set the fastest time in his home Grand Prix, cue rapturous celebrations from an adoring crowd. Quite fittingly, his future team mate Kimi Raikkonen secured 2nd on the grid in his last race for McLaren. The Fin will be hoping to conclude his 5 year association with the Woking operation in victorious circumstances.

And the man that will inherit Kimi’s seat, Fernando Alonso, is 4th on the grid, and but for horrid luck or uncharacteristic misjudgement, should be able to score the minimum point needed to win back-to-back titles for Renault, ending an amazing era for the Spanish driver, French team, and mastermind Italian team principal Flavio Briatore. The celebrations tomorrow maybe as emotional for this reason for them as it will be at Ferrari.

Ahead of Alonso, Jarno Trulli rubber stamped his authority as a qualifying specialist – 3rd for him. Barrichello and Fisichella were 5th and 6th, Ralf Schumacher in 7th. Sauber-BMW pair, Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica, were 8th and 9th respectively, a fine effort for the German team.

Jenson Button struggled, and could only manage to qualify in 14th, whilst David Coulthard continued his recent slump in his Red Bull, out in the first session in 19th – and out-qualified by team mate Robert Doornbos (or is that Doornobs?), who qualified in 15th.

Thanks, it's been a pleasure. I didn't think I'd ever say this, but I'm actually quite sad Schumi is quitting. I remember when it was Schumi vs Hakkinen - now THAT was a duel. Hopefully Alonso vs Raikkonen can live up to that.
