I have to say the whole rights issue/spot beam saga is a joke. I know at least 100 people, probably more, here in Gran Canaria most of whome are living in small apartments or bungalows where they have no chance of having any sort of "big dish". Very few of them are remotely "tech savvy" or read these forums and yet they are all watching British TV either via VPNs, Slingboxes or online services. It is absolutely ludicrous that all this effort is being put into providing "spot beams" to protect rights (putting aside frequency re-use for now) when the average man in the street can circumvent it without a second thought.

i am getting asked a lot more that new tvs ppl buy have internet inside, and by next year yo0u will be able to buy BBC I PLAYER offically here in spain.as per hacking into the uk version, non britsh content cannot be seen..

/iplayer.bbcworldwide.com

ps can anyone point me to a post about why iplayer is sooo slow to download...i can down load us progs inc 5 mins not hours like bbc

if they are on teh far east coast not sure which states, they can probally get 28.2 but they needa huge dish my guess about 3-5m as that roughyl wha ti have worked out would be needed to grab some of the american satiilletes here and before i get ther eover the horizon there not, well not all of them some are visible over hte horizon but your talking only just

No chance because it is below the horizon. The furthest west that 28E can be seen from is south-east Greenland, and in Iceland 2D is an easy catch (8º elevation) even on small dishes.

28.2E is not the most perfect position for the UK actually. 1W or 2W would have been much better to get a higher elevation angle. Also the design of spot beam antennae would have been more simple, now the beam is actually "going" across parts of Europe, because the satellites are so much further east - even for countries like Germany or Italy.

The Scandinavians knew why they went to 1W from 19.2 in the 90s - elevation is an issue there, especially in the northern parts of Norway and Sweden, where mountains can be high enough to block the signal for whole communities. In Norway they call that "sat skygge" - satellite shadow.

i got told that about 77W and it aint over the horizon in the uk it just about sitting on the horizon so would be just about impossible to pick up so i suspect never really looked that 28.2 will be pretty much on the horizon, as i say ive never looked dnt live in america so no need to try find out

EDIT: because i was curious just checked seems your right weel over the horizon

I'm sure I remember reading some years ago that broadcasters prefer satellite positions in the east because it then means that the biannual solar outages occur in the morning when fewer people watch than at other times of the day.

East Maine is the best position in the U.S. for European satellites, and the lowest elevation satellite is 9ºE, so no chance of anything east of that.

They are busy swapping transponders at 19.2 these days, during the last 2 nights a few of them were taken of 1KR and shifted towards 2C.... for whatever reason.

As I cant see it on an SD rx, 20780 may be flagged as an HD channel. I'll have a look on the Duo when the other half has finished watching NHK HD :D

The lads over on the DS forum agree that 20780 is an HD label. Therefore we have

20700 SD
20701 SD
20715 SD
20780 HD
20791 data?

As you can see them in Romania does this suggest they are on the widebeam?

Uk beam for sure. With 3.0m prime focus antenna, I can get only 10964 with 6.5-7db, and 11053 with 6db or less. 6db is the limit for lock on a frequency with fec 5/6 in dvbs on my stb.
11127 is very weak, too much under lock limit.
